Some fans were so enthusiastic about the role-playing hit The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that they developed their own game from it. Enderal started as a mod on Steam and is now standalone – and free for all owners of Skyrim.
What kind of game is it? Enderal: Forgotten Stories is a so-called “Total Conversion Mod” for Skyrim. This means: only the framework and engine have remained the same. Everything else is the creation of the modders. The mod was released on Steam in 2019 and comes from the studio SureAI.
Skyrim is, like almost all games from Bethesda on Steam, known for its vast array of mods that can alter nearly every aspect. The creators of Enderal took advantage of this and created their own game. Features of the game include:
- full German and English voice acting with professional speakers
- an original story and lore as well as a unique world with different regions
- well-developed characters
- custom classes with a new skill system and special abilities
- survival elements, furniture, and housing
Enderal is said to offer between 35 and 125 hours of gameplay, but it is purely single-player. You can watch the story trailer here:
How do I get Enderal? Since this is a mod, you don’t have to pay anything for Enderal. However, you need to own the base version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Enderal comes in 2 versions, Standard and Special Edition, for which you need the corresponding version of Skyrim:
“95% Skyrim, 100% new content”
This is how Enderal comes: On Steam, Enderal is very well received. The two versions have amassed reviews of 93% and 94% overall with more than 15,000 ratings.
Players shower it with praise. It is said, for instance: even if you don’t own Skyrim and buy it but never touch it, it’s worth it just for Enderal. The user salomeya writes:
“This is not a game. This is an experience. I honestly did not expect this. A Skyrim mod? No, this is an absolutely standalone gem that has nothing in common with Skyrim, except for maybe a few textures. Enderal is definitely better than Skyrim and Oblivion. […]
The story itself is complex, keeping players engaged. The main story is unique. Through all the hope and despair, love and terror, you go on until you find out what you really saw at the beginning and what lies behind the cycle. The side quests, although there aren’t many of them, […] are well written and designed. […]
The game draws you into the Enderal reality as the protagonist was violently pulled in.”
The occasional criticism that is voiced about the game mostly concerns the difficulty. Enderal is said to be quite hard, possibly even impossible for casuals. Those who play it must be ready for a big challenge.
