Roccat Syn Pro Air Test: Good Sound with Weak Software

Roccat Syn Pro Air Test: Good Sound with Weak Software

With a frequency range of 15 Hz – 20,000 Hz, Roccat aims to cover all frequencies that the human ear can detect. Below 10 Hz, we perceive nothing, and above 20,000 Hz, we cannot hear anything.

Which frequencies you hear depends on age and various environmental factors. You can take a test at Funkkopfhoerer-infos to see which frequencies you can still hear (via funkkopfhoerer-infos-de).

What we like: The Roccat Syn Pro Air offers a well-rounded, neutral sound in its price category. With the equalizers, you can further adjust the sound, but this also sacrifices the neutral quality.

In particular, the device is not overly bass-heavy, allowing quiet sounds to be clearly located within the sound. This way, footsteps or sounds in a shooter like Apex Legend can be accurately placed, and we know immediately from which direction footsteps or shots are coming. With “Superhuman Hearing,” the frequencies for footsteps can be slightly enhanced.

Due to the neutral sound, the headset can also be used for movies or music. The sound can be adjusted further with the equalizer.

What is less successful: 3D audio with the Syn Pro Air is a double-edged sword. On one hand, you get the feeling of being surrounded by sound and bombast. On the other hand, localization suffers significantly. While it rumbles and crashes everywhere, the footsteps of your opponents can hardly be distinguished from the sound. This is great for single-player games, but quite a hindrance in competitive multiplayer.

A similar problem exists with “Superhuman Hearing”: footsteps and other noises are considerably easier to hear, but other sounds are pushed into the background.

Microphone

What we like: The microphone offers reasonable quality in voice chat. Our teammates can understand us clearly. The mic is clear, loud and provides decent bass. This way, we sound quite natural.

The microphone is both foldable and detachable.

The detachable microphone of the Roccat Syn Pro Air.

What is less successful: The USB dongle limits the microphone’s transmission. Overall, the microphone sounds like the frequencies have been cut in the highs and lows to ensure wireless transmission. If you plan to use the headset for audio recording or podcasts, it’s better to look for another headset or at least an external microphone.

Connection quality and battery life

What we like: In most cases, the connection between the USB dongle and gaming headset works flawlessly. Alternatively, the gaming headset can also be operated via the included USB-C cable.

Two positive aspects of the headset are both the battery life and good range. We can comfortably hang laundry while being separated by a thick wall or two rooms and can still hear what’s happening on the PC and talk to our friends.

The battery life is also convincing. The headset can be comfortably used for 2 to 3 consecutive days on a single charge before the battery runs out. If we turn off the RGB lighting, the battery lasts even longer.

Conclusion: Good gaming headset with unnecessary lighting

For whom is the headset suitable? Especially users with a smaller head can consider this headset, as it sits comfortably and lightly due to its low weight. The microphone is also a good solution for most gamers who don’t want to record or make podcasts. The neutral sound should appeal to both gamers and users who also enjoy listening to music or watching movies.

Especially for large heads, the headset offers too little room. A dynamic headband would definitely help the ergonomics, relieving the pressure on larger heads.

The RRP of 149.99 euros seems too high, as we can already get strong competition for this money. Competition that offers similar or even more performance for a similar price.

What alternatives are there? For 150 euros, you can get the Turtle Beach Stealth 700, SteelSeries Arctis 7, and also the Astro A20 V2, which are just as good or even better devices for the same price.

The Turtle Beach Stealth 700 offers even better sound quality and a better microphone in direct comparison. The processing can be significantly more convincing with the Stealth 700.

The SteelSeries Arctis 7 offers a significantly more mature software and a dynamic headband, making the headset more comfortable to wear. Additionally, you get additional features for the PS5 or Xbox on the Arctis 7 (P/X). The Syn Pro Air is primarily a PC headset.

The Astro A20 V2 offers similar strengths to the Roccat Syn Pro Air but is slightly cheaper at 120 euros than the Roccat device.

Other alternatives could also include the Logitech G Pro X and the Razer BlackShark V2. For the price of 150 euros, the Roccat Syn Pro Air faces a tough market. And if you want to stay with Roccat: With the Roccat Elo 7.1 Air, you can get a wireless device for around 100 euros, and even with an adjustable headband.

The Roccat Syn Pro Air in practical tests

So far, we have introduced you to the general data and facts of the Syn Pro Air. But how does it perform in practice in terms of sound, comfort, and microphone?

Comfort

What we like: The ear cups can tilt and rotate, allowing them to adapt well to the human head. This way, the gaming headset feels quite comfortable even during long sessions. The padding on the headband is thick enough so that you don’t feel the hard plastic of the band against your head. The ears are well surrounded by the cushions.

The headset also sits stably and securely on the head, and even when we move our heads quickly, the headset stays in place.

Weighing in at just 286 grams, the headset is quite lightweight. Once the headset is comfortably fitted, it is hardly felt on the head.

The breathable textile covers with memory foam not only look good but also feel pleasant on the ears. In summer, they are much better suited for gaming than leather ear cushions.

What we don’t like: It is unfortunate that Roccat does not use an elastic headband like in their proprietary Roccat ELO series for the Syn Pro Air. The ELO series is more comfortable in direct comparison.

Also, the width of the headset is somewhat short. People with larger heads may feel pressure where the headband rests on the head. This becomes noticeably uncomfortable after some time.

People with smaller heads, on the other hand, did not have problems with the ergonomics. Overall, the headset lacks room for various head sizes.
