Roblox is achieving great success, especially among young players. Some players even earn money by creating and selling their own content.
What exactly is Roblox? Roblox is a gaming platform where users can create their own games using a building system. Basically, you can develop almost anything in Roblox, including shooters, racing games, puzzle games, adventures, RPGs, and even MMOs.
These games are then available on the platform, where anyone can play them for free. Developers can also offer additional content like pets and cosmetic items for character customization. Players can buy these using in-game currency Robux.
Especially during the Corona pandemic, Roblox has developed into a kind of social network for kids. They connect with friends they can’t see during lockdowns and play together or hang out in social hubs.
Roblox is so successful among younger players that it is basically akin to YouTube for Generation Z.
Even children can earn money with Roblox
How successful is the game? Roblox launched on February 27, 2008. By now, it has over 150 million active players. In 2020 alone, they generated revenue of approximately 924 million USD (via Forbes). They did this by purchasing Robux and merchandise like T-shirts.
This has made the founder of the studio, David Baszucki, a billionaire. But the players also earn a lot.
How do players earn money? Those who create content for Roblox receive a portion of the revenue from Robux sales. When in-game currency is spent on items in player-created worlds, they get 35 cents for every 100 Robux. (via Forbes)
The 1.25 million users who create content earned a total of 328 million USD in 2020.
More than 1,200 content creators earned over 10,000 dollars in a year.
Over 300 were even able to earn more than 100,000 dollars.
These individuals include both children creating content for fun and adults as well.
Some developers are in college, some are in high school, a few are even younger – probably around 13 or 14 years old. Some of them earn 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 dollars a month. Once you reach 5,000 or 10,000 a month, it becomes a rather interesting job that you can do alongside your studies.
