Riot Games is currently working behind the scenes on a MMORPG for League of Legends. However, despite the game being announced at the end of 2020, there are still very few details about it. Now, a shoutcaster reports on a meeting with the head of the studio.
What does the shoutcaster say? Guan Zeyuan is a professional commentator for League of Legends in China. At the end of July, he released a video discussing the meeting with the head of Riot Games (via bilibili). He does not name a specific person but mentions that this individual oversees all the games produced by the studio.
This person is reported to have said to him: „If I’m a game designer, I won’t put my career on this project“. He is also said to have confirmed that work is actively being done on the MMORPG, but that there is as yet no “graphics” (there is no Art in it).
The video is currently generating much discussion on MMORPG Reddit and in the community in general. The fact that there has been no gameplay or concrete information after more than two and a half years frustrates many.

Release seems to be years away
What does the shoutcaster suspect behind the statements? Guan Zeyuan is confident that the MMORPG will eventually be released. However, he assumes there are significant problems and hurdles in development that are already causing delays.
The large LoL MMORPG must be something unique and cannot simply copy WoW. Therefore, he believes the ideation process is simply taking longer than usual.
What is the meaning behind the quote? That a developer should not build their career on the LoL MMORPG sounds a bit like the head does not believe in the project himself. However, it could also be interpreted in another way.
Because the development will take many years, young developers might have nothing to show when they leave the studio after 2, 3, or maybe even 5 years and look for new employers. Because by then, the project might still be under NDA, and the content created cannot be shown as work samples.
The head could simply have been referring to a long development time.
What do we actually know about the MMORPG? It will take place in Runeterra, the world of League of Legends. In the endgame, it is expected to focus on dungeons and raids but also offer PvP. It is unclear whether this will only take place in instances or in the open world.
There is expected to be a Holy Trinity, and players will not play as known LoL champions. But that’s about all we know.
