Several months ago, Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends, announced an MMORPG. Now there are job postings and an MMORPG developer who has joined Riot.
What kind of game is it? Little is known so far about the MMORPG set in the League of Legends universe. In December 2020, Ghostcrawler, Vice President of IP and Entertainment at Riot, only shared via Twitter that an MMORPG is being developed in the LoL universe.
Such a LoL MMORPG has been desired by some for years, as Riot is the last studio that many players think could actually create a big MMORPG. Most new games in this genre come from indie studios, as is the case with Ashes of Creation, Crowfall, or Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen.
What’s new? Riot has now published its own page where developers can apply for the game. It states:
No, you’re not dreaming, we are working on an MMORPG set in the League universe! We know that MMOs need a lot of people to create, and we need a pretty big raid team if we want to bring Runeterra to life.
There is no specific job opening, but developers are generally sought who have experience in the following areas:
- Gameplay Engineering
- Game Design
- UX Design
- Game Art (All Sub-Disciplines)
- Game Production
Along with the page, two new artworks were released. One of them has been used in the title image. However, they provide no hints about the direction of the game.
GW2 developer becomes Game Director at Riot Games
Who is working on the MMORPG? Currently, there is no information about which specific developers are working on the new game.
However, Linsey Murdock announced on February 20 that she is leaving ArenaNet and becoming Game Director at Riot Games for an as-yet-unannounced project.
Many on Reddit suspect that the unannounced project could be the MMORPG. It has already been announced, but details and a name are still missing.
Murdock has worked on Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 since 2006. Since 2015, she has been the lead for the Living World.
When to expect a release? The LoL MMORPG will need some years before it is released. Much indicates that work on the game has only begun relatively recently. Because in 2019, such an MMORPG was still denied.

Riot Games is currently working on several new titles. In addition to LoL, TFT, Valorant, and Wild Rift, the new Project F has also been announced, a multiplayer game in isometric perspective. Whether this is the MMORPG described here or another multiplayer game is still unclear.
