In a blog post, Riot recently commented on the design of the new champion Kai’Sa in League of Legends. This new LoL champion was developed to be “unnecessarily sexualized.” In the future, the studio wants to put more thought into such design decisions.
In February, Riot introduced the new champion Kai’Sa for League of Legends. Kai’Sa has been stranded in the Void for years, surviving only by bonding with a creature of the Void.
This was supposed to be shown through the design of the champion, but particularly Kai’Sa’s deep neckline seems to be received poorly by some players.
Riot admits that the design could have been better
In a blog post, Riot responded to questions from the community. One player wanted to know why Kai’Sa needs such a deep neckline, especially since the developers had previously spoken out against unnecessarily sexualized champions.

According to REAV3, the Lead Producer of Champions, the team wanted to show that Kai’Sa was a normal human who could only survive by connecting with a creature of the Void. Players should see that Kai’Sa was not corrupted by her experiences.
Therefore, it was important for Riot to show that Kai’Sa is a human in a Void suit, rather than a monstrosity created by the Void.
Necklines should show more skin to prove that Kai’Sa is human
At the beginning of development, the new champion also did not have a deep neckline. However, along with the dark hair and the suit, Kai’Sa’s face was too small and difficult to see with the in-game camera to really portray her as a human.
The team redesigned her neckline to show more of her human skin.
However, REAV3 admits in the blog post that they should have sought other ways to solve this problem, especially since the final result was not well received by some players. Although they had good intentions with the design, they want to think more about such design decisions in the future.
