An MMORPG based on League of Legends is at the top of many players’ wish lists. And the dream is now coming true. As Riot employee Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street revealed on Twitter, work is currently underway on such a game.
What happened? Ghostcrawler was a game designer for LoL for several years and now works as Vice President of IP and Entertainment at Riot Games.
On the night of Friday, he announced on Twitter that he is working on a new game based on League of Legends. He hinted that it is a large, “some would say massive” game that many players have long desired.
Under the tweet, questions piled up about whether this could really be an MMO. One of them was answered by Ghostcrawler with a short: “It’s an MMO”.

The PCGamer website subsequently submitted an inquiry to Riot Games. They confirmed that Ghostcrawler was officially speaking on behalf of the company and that the game will indeed be a MMORPG:
Greg’s tweet is our only official statement at this time. I can confirm that he will be working on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).
What exactly will this game be? Currently, there is still no detailed information about the new LoL MMO. We only know from Ghostcrawler that employees are still being sought for development.

Why an MMORPG based on LoL? In recent years, there have been virtually no new MMORPGs that could engage players in the long term. For a while now, the same games in development have been repeatedly mentioned, such as Project TL, Ashes of Creation, or Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen. But they simply are not finished.
At the same time, the same games repeatedly land in the top lists and have had the most players for years – like WoW, ESO, or FFXIV.
One of the few companies that one would expect to create a new, large MMO is Riot Games. They already have a well-developed lore and many characters in their LoL universe that could be integrated into such a game.
Why do players hope for an MMORPG? A tweet from Marc Merill, one of the founders of Riot Games, sparked this hope in 2018. In it, he asked if people were excited about a LoL MMO. And thousands answered affirmatively.
However, shortly thereafter, there was a letdown. The LoL employee The_Cactopus revealed that no League MMO is in development.
Then, in October 2019, 6 new games from the company were announced, and many hoped again for an MMORPG. Especially the new Project F looked promising.
But in an interview, Marc Merril dampened the hype again. He emphasized that if a LoL MMO were in development, it would not be released “soon” and would need a lot of time to meet the demands.
However, Ghostcrawler has now officially confirmed the MMORPG. Whether this is Project F is not known. It could also be a completely new game. The fact that employees are still being sought suggests that it may take several years until release.
