Riot started with League of Legends as its first game, and that game is still the company’s biggest passion project today. However, now Riot wants to change the old Summoner Name System
to Riot IDs, like they already have in Valorant and other games. The community is not happy about this at all.

Summoner Names
in LoL will change to Riot IDs - If the Riot ID is identical to your Summoner Name, nothing will change for you at first
- If you want to know what your Riot ID is, you can find it on your Riot Account Page
- Once a year you can change your ID for free, if you want to do it more often, it costs €10
Why is Riot doing this? According to Riot Games, it has mainly to do with the lore. In the beginning of LoL, people talked about Summoners, and they were also mentioned in voice lines. Over the years, the focus shifted to the champions themselves, and Summoners as a concept completely disappeared.
Additionally, it will be technically simpler across several Riot games if everyone has the same name. However, unlike the change of the bot games, the community is not thrilled about the name change.

90% of the community disagree with this. It only harms the uniqueness of each person’s name with their unique username.

The community primarily has criticisms that creativity and uniqueness will disappear with this change, as people can have the same names as long as the #-TAG
differs.
Also, the free name change meets with backlash, as it is only available once a year and otherwise costs €10. Previously, it could be paid with blue essences. For streamers who are regularly stream sniped, this results in additional annual costs.
Also, the explanation with the lore
