On Steam, you can currently grab a chilling strategy highlight at a bargain price. However, this game will demand quite a lot from you.
Which game are we talking about? This is about Frostpunk, a survival strategy game from developer 11 bit studios, the creators of This War of Mine. The main game currently costs only €2.99 on Steam, and the “Game of the Year” edition with all DLCs, soundtrack, and digital artbook is available for €8.22. This offer is valid until February 3, 2025.
A trailer for the game can be seen here:
In Frostpunk, not only are the temperatures freezing cold
What is the game about? The world of Frostpunk is enveloped in an eternal snowstorm that has already wiped out most of humanity. To survive in this environment, the remnants of humanity have developed steam-powered machines – hence the “(Steam-)Punk” in the name.
You take on the role of the captain of a small colony. You must keep the residents of your settlement warm and healthy, procure food, and manage other important aspects of daily life. Additionally, you enact laws, research new technologies, and explore the cold wasteland in search of answers and valuable supplies.
What makes the game a highlight? Reviews for the main game on Steam are “very positive”, and GameStar gave Frostpunk a score of 86 out of 100 in their review. After the release of an endless mode and other free expansions, the rating was increased by several points.
Frostpunk is particularly characterized by its relentless survival aspects and moral dilemmas: More workers for the colony are good, but do you also spare children? And how do you deal with individuals who could threaten your rule?
Too many wrong decisions and you will be “relieved of your position”. However, it is not always easy to determine which decision would be the right one. No matter what you do, at the end of the day, your hands will be stained with blood – you can only choose whose it will be.
In September 2024, Frostpunk 2 was released, a sequel to the strategy hit that is also quite intense. It has not lost any of the dark atmosphere of its predecessor: MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus entered Frostpunk 2 with the best intentions but ended up becoming a dictator.
