The first expansion of the MMORPG was released in 2012 under the title Storm Legion. Those who wanted to play the new content had to purchase the addon. However, it quickly became apparent that this was not well received by all players, and so for the second expansion Nightmare Tide, a new approach was considered. The addon was offered for free, but several microtransactions were introduced. After all, the company had to find a way to finance itself. Creating an addon takes a lot of time and money.

Over time, it became clear that this was also not well received by players. Many felt disadvantaged because friends could buy certain items and use them right away, while they could not. This led to intense criticism, forcing Trion Worlds to rethink how to offer an addon that generates revenue without upsetting players. Therefore, for the upcoming expansion Starfall Prophecy, it was decided to offer it for a fee again. This decision was made together with the community, which provided a lot of feedback to the developers.

The addon will be offered in the regular version for 39.99 dollars and in the deluxe version with some cosmetic items for 59.99 dollars. This is considered a fair deal.
