The fantasy MMORPG Rift is apparently planning a new expansion. This was accidentally announced.
It is strange that particularly German sites have the “coup” of knowing the secret information, more than anyone else and don’t even notice it.
Apparently, some German gaming sites, without thinking twice, published the line-up from Trion Worlds for Gamescom in August and mentioned: They will present the new Rift add-on “Starfall Prophecy” there.
This was mentioned in the same breath as ArcheAge 3.0, a console port of Trove, and the presentation of Atlas Reactor. Together, with three things that were already known.
New expansion for Rift revealed through copy and paste?
“Wait a moment,” U.S. colleagues said: “The new Rift add-on? That hasn’t been announced yet.” It was speculated that something like this could exist – a name “Starfall Prophecy” was copyrighted. “Could this be 4.0?”, it was speculated in fan forums about the game. However, on the other side of the Atlantic, at least officially, not much more was known.
Apparently, the German press release, which seems to have been published via copy & paste by some online sites, is significantly further along than what other media received and what is actually the “current state of information”. The colleagues with the revelation news seemed not to have properly categorized the information. Perhaps some embargo was accidentally violated.
This is not officially confirmed. It is also conceivable that something went wrong with the press release somewhere. In any case, a bizarre situation: Trion Worlds certainly did not want to announce that they would like to present an expansion in Cologne in this way.
Gamescom 2016 takes place in mid-August in Cologne. Rift, praised for its fair free-to-play model for many years, has recently sailed into rather turbulent waters – they struggled to monetize the game, tightened the “payment screws” which annoyed the fans – an expansion might come just in time.
