In Destiny 2, the Stasis element not only brought new abilities and Supers but also more customization freedom in builds with the new focus. But what about the old ones? Will these be adapted to the new system?
What is the new system about? With the new expansion Beyond Light, numerous new content came to the game – including the new damage element Stasis.
Stasis itself introduced 3 fresh focuses along with new abilities and Supers – one focus per Guardian class. These new focuses are organized in a new, modular system. This provides more freedom and options than the previous focuses of Destiny 2 and is more aligned with the customization system of the first game.
In short, this allows for more diversity and flexible options when creating and fine-tuning builds for one’s playstyle.
Why a revision? This particular option is well received by many, yet it is precisely this option that is missing for the existing abilities and Supers from the time before Stasis. There, nothing has changed; the new system only applies to the new Ice powers of the players.
Consequently, many players wish for changes and an adaptation of the old focuses to the new customization system that was introduced exclusively for Stasis. Because the new icy element casts the existing “old” Supers quite in the shadow.
However, Bungie has not commented on this so far. In short: Until recently, it was unclear if and what would happen to the old focuses. Now Bungie has addressed this in an interview with Polygon. What do we know now?
The Destiny director talks about Supers and identity
This is what Bungie says about the old Supers: Luke Smith, the franchise director of Destiny, addressed this very topic. It appears that Bungie is generally not opposed to bringing the new system to the old subclasses as well. However, this is likely to take a while before it happens.
“We only want one central system for Supers,” Smith told Polygon. However, there is no immediate release date for it. Smith emphasized that there are currently many other priorities at Bungie, and this aspect is not being actively pursued right now. In the long term, though, it’s something Smith is passionate about.
On reddit, he emphasized: “With a sufficiently long timeframe, it would certainly be cool if all Supers in Destiny utilized the same system.”
In short: Bungie has that in mind, but players should not expect an immediate revision of the ability system for the old classes in the near future.
Will the classes gain more identity? Speaking of old classes: Additionally, Smith mentioned that a Super system revision – if it happens – would also be a good opportunity for a general fine-tuning of the classes.
According to Smith, the classes used to have more identity; there was a good balance. Titans had their powerful but stationary bubble, Warlocks could revive themselves, and Hunters had their mobile Supers. There was a kind of “class envy.” Classes could do specific things that only they excelled at. However, with new Supers from Taken King, Forsaken, or Beyond Light, this has become increasingly blurred, and the unique identity has been increasingly lost.
If Bungie were to actually implement the new system for the old Supers someday, they would likely return in a revised form – with more unique identity. Even if this could mean that some existing sub-focuses might be removed.
Stasis will continue to be expanded: Additionally, Luke Smith reiterated Bungie’s intention to further develop the Stasis powers of the Guardians in the future. More on this can be found here: Stasis will get even stronger – New Aspects & Fragments are coming
