Phasmophobia is a horror co-op game on Steam. It is very well received by players. We will reveal to you why 97% of players rate it positively.
What fascinates about the game? Phasmophobia is the English term for “fear of ghosts” and that is exactly what the co-op game takes advantage of. You take on the role of a ghost hunter and start a match together with up to 3 other players.
Your task is to identify the ghost in a house. To do this, you can use various devices like cameras, thermometers, and EMF readers (electromagnetic fields). You place these in the rooms. Additionally, you can find evidence like old photos.
Another highlight is that you can talk directly to the ghosts. They respond to your voice, which can calm them down but also make them angry. This is supposed to provide a particularly creepy experience, especially if you use a VR headset and completely immerse yourself in the world.
A player for horror fans, but also for scaredy-cats
What do the reviews on Steam say? Phasmophobia does extremely well on Steam. According to Steamcharts, a total of 86,576 players were playing the horror game simultaneously at its all-time peak. This peak was only set on the night of October 11. Of the total 25,441 reviews (as of October 12 at 4:00 PM), 97 % are positive.
Phasmophobia receives praise especially for its unique atmosphere combined with multiplayer. But even scaredy-cats should not shy away from the game:
- Traumzaenzerin describes her experiences like this: “The game surprised me very positively, the atmosphere is crazy, the variety (maps, tools, ghosts) is surprisingly large, and after three hours we still only did a handful of things. Anyone who has played House Flipper will recognize the setup right away, just that Phasmophobia is actually creepy unlike that game.”
- Also, –Der obst– is thrilled by the creepy atmosphere: “In my opinion, this is the first multiplayer horror game that manages to be fun and creepy at the same time. The gameplay is super exciting, especially with colleagues, and you can really enjoy being scared together because the atmosphere is just insane.”
- User NO CLITANTRO emphasizes that even scaredy-cats can have fun in Phasmophobia: “If you like horror and are a team player but hate the trend of jump scares in the horror scene, then Phasmophobia is just right for you […]. The developers have managed to make it so that both scaredy-cats and veteran urban explorers can find themselves in this game. Anyone can adjust their gameplay experience according to their perception, not just in the difficulty levels. Those who wish can control their team from the safe truck or be the first to venture into dark and damp basement rooms.”
- The user m4rk4YY ツ writes about the game: “Despite being in Early Access, this is already one of my favorite games of 2020 […] Even if the concept may seem boring or uninteresting to an outside person, I recommend everyone to try it with a few friends.”
A big plus that users also see is that Phasmophobia only costs 11.59 euros. For little money, you should get a very good game.
What do critics say? On Steam, in addition to the many positive reactions, there are also some negative reviews. These mainly relate to technical issues and the somewhat clunky controls:
- The user flanders writes: “At first, it annoyed me that you have to complete the training first. But it quickly becomes clear why. Because the controls or the overall handling of the game is the real horror. Although it should be a help, the training is totally unclearly explained, which is also due to the obviously used Google Translation. Very strange decision for the menu navigation. Realism? Kind of! It is not realistic when there is only one flashlight for the team and everyone has to follow the bearer, because otherwise, you can’t see anything.”
- G E CK O on the other hand, has problems with the character’s speed: “It was fun for the first hour, but it quickly got boring. And it doesn’t help that the character runs so slowly. But I also played without VR and can imagine that it’s more fun with VR.
Phasmophobia is really an interesting and creepy co-op game. The numbers are currently rising and it looks like it could be the next hype game on Steam.
