How did the woman win? Texan Jane Doe bought her lottery ticket for Lotto Texas on February 17, 2025 (seen on NBC News). However, instead of going to a kiosk to buy the tickets, she purchased her tickets through the online service of the Jackpocket Lottery App.
The 83-year-old experienced what we all wish for in life: She hit the jackpot by picking the right numbers. Just like that, she became 71.5 million euros richer.
Yet she still has not received her winnings. Therefore, she has now filed a lawsuit to finally get her money.
Elderly woman wins the lottery, has to sue for the money
Why has she still not received her winnings? The Texas Lottery announced a week after the elderly woman’s win that it wanted to ban the unregulated lottery ticket courier services “with immediate effect,” including the Jackpocket Lottery App.
The third-party apps had previously allowed all Texans to purchase lottery tickets online from authorized retailers. However, the companies had never been regulated in Texas regarding the fees for purchasing and managing lottery tickets.
To combat this practice, the Texas Lottery has likely decided to ban the services. Unfortunately for the woman, this happened exactly one week after her numbers were drawn.
How did the elderly lady react? Doe filed a lawsuit on May 19. It states that the commission “is not allowed to change the rules after the drawing.” Lotto Texas is supposed to try to deny the payout of Doe’s winnings through a retroactive ban.
The trial is likely to take some time and the lady must continue to hope for her money.
