3. Worlds Adrift (May 24, 2017 – July 26, 2019)
What was Worlds Adrift? Worlds Adrift was a sandbox MMO that had been available on Steam in early access since May 2017. The focus was on islands that floated in the air and could be explored. Players could strap on wings or craft airships.
The sandbox aspect even extended to allowing players to create islands themselves and upload them to the game. Few games have offered so much freedom.
What did the MMO fail at? In a video to the community, the developers explained that Worlds Adrift never reached the popularity needed to be financially viable.
The developers also admitted that the game did not become the experience they aimed to achieve.
What are the best memories? The idea of exploring a beautiful world full of uninhabited and unknown islands invites daydreaming.
But much more than these dreams will remain since the game lacked some essential content. That’s why the MMO never made it out of early access.
Are there alternatives or successors? If you are excited about a world full of airships and aerial combat, the upcoming MMORPG Ascent: Infinite Realm could be interesting.
Optically, the two MMOs have little in common, as A:IR is set in a modern, steampunk-oriented world. However, the world here can still mostly be explored at great heights.
