2. Battlestar Galactica Online (February 8, 2011 to January 31, 2019)
What was Battlestar Galactica Online? In this browser MMO, players could battle as humans or Cylons for almost 8 years and engage in space battles against each other.
The game was developed by Bigpoint Games, was free-to-play, and was loosely based on the story of the TV series Battlestar Galactica. Nevertheless, it generated a lot of attention at launch and gained more than two million registered users shortly after its release.
What did the MMO fail at? Despite great interest at launch, Battlestar Galactica Online failed to retain players long-term. The game was also criticized for apparent pay-to-win elements.
Moreover, the development was noticeably scaled back in 2018. According to the publisher, they tried everything to keep the MMO alive. Ultimately, however, it was discontinued at the end of January.
What are the best memories? Battlestar Galactica Online was not necessarily known for its realism when controlling the spaceships. But precisely because of that, the battles were very dynamic and a lot of fun.

Are there alternatives or successors? The developers themselves recommended a switch to Dark Orbit, a space shooter from the same studio. However, it only uses a two-dimensional world.
A better alternative is the game Pirate Galaxy. It uses a 3D world and also offers you exciting space battles in the browser.
Finally, you can also rely on Eve Online. This space MMO is, however, significantly more complex, requires a separate client, and has monthly fees.
A cool space MMO in development is Dual Universe. We spoke with the developers at Gamescom:
