Games whose deaths were decided in 2021
As in every year, deaths for the future were announced in 2021 as well. Included are an old competitor of League of Legends and a shooter that many hoped for in 2019.
More details on these deaths will come next year when we present to you the MMOs and online games that died in 2022.
Heroes of Newerth (May 12, 2010 – June 20, 2022)
What kind of game is it? Heroes of Newerth is essentially a game similar to LoL:
- In both games, two teams with five players each fight each other
- You take on the role of a champion with the goal of destroying the enemy base
- Both games have three lanes where minions run and towers stand
However, Heroes of Newerth is more closely based on the DOTA mod. The game is darker and not as beginner-friendly as LoL. It also employs the “deny” technique. You can intentionally kill your own minions and towers so the enemy doesn’t receive gold and experience points.
When and why will the game be discontinued? Heroes of Newerth is expected to continue until June 20, 2022. Until then, players have the opportunity to experience adventures in this MOBA once more.
The discontinuation is not entirely surprising as the last real content patch was released in 2019. Since then, only bug fixes and minor balance updates have intentionally been released. The game simply couldn’t compete with LoL and DOTA 2 over the long term.
Anthem (February 22, 2019 – X)
What kind of game is it? Anthem was a new loot shooter released in 2019. You took on the role of one of four different Javelins, which you could roam within an open world. You could venture alone or in co-op with up to 3 other players.
There were story contents, open-world co-op missions, and daily, weekly, as well as monthly quests that you could complete.
However, right from the start, there was criticism of the loot system, which was actually the core of the game.
When and why will the game be discontinued? Anthem was apparently finished too late and then released too hastily. The launch flopped, and it was decided to develop a kind of “Anthem 2.0.” However, that release will not happen.
In early 2021, it was announced that Anthem would be discontinued. Although the servers are still operational, it’s only a matter of time before they are shut down. There will be no new features for the game.
