The forum ResetEra changes ownership: The “M.O.B.A. Network” has acquired the large gaming platform – and paid a considerable sum for it.
This forum is about: ResetEra is one of the most important gaming forums in the English-speaking world, alongside reddit. It was established in 2017 as an alternative to the previously dominant forum “NeoGAF,” after it became embroiled in a scandal.
To this day, ResetEra has over 45 million posts from about 55,000 members (via Eurogamer). The reason for this figure is also due to the fact that while the forum is accessible to everyone, it imposes some requirements for registration.
In its own “Mission Statement,” it boasts about having one of the toughest registration screenings of all open forums (via ResetEra), in order to keep trolls or problematic users at bay. The forum is also known for industry insiders or journalists commenting on gaming topics.
This is the deal: The “M.O.B.A. Network” has now snagged ResetEra – for the sum of 4.55 million dollars (equivalent to over 3.9 million euros).
The network also brings together numerous communities, among which ResetEra is now included. These include portals such as “Mobafire,” “Dotafire,” “Smitefire,” “Leaguespy,” or “Heroesfire.” For many fans of League of Legends, Dota 2, and more, these are considered top destinations for guides and builds.
ResetEra primarily earns money through advertising or subscriptions – a path that the M.O.B.A. Network wants to pursue and expand.
What exactly this means for the site was attempted to be explained further on ResetEra.
This is what ResetEra says about the ownership change
In an FAQ on ResetEra discussing the deal, head “Cerium” explains that there were several potential buyers – and that they ultimately chose the M.O.B.A. Network because it offered a good mix of new resources and independence.
“What matters is that they absolutely have no interest in changing the ResetEra community or its culture in any way,” says Cerium: “Their approach is to stay in the background and only deal with business and logistical matters” (via ResetEra).
Employees of ResetEra are expected to remain independent in their management of the site, and the rules of the forum should not be changed from above.
The advantages include having the necessary resources in the background to operate the site long-term. Interaction with the other sites of the network is not initially planned: “Their other websites have no influence on us, and we have no influence on them.”
The familiar discussion culture on ResetEra is apparently to be maintained – only now someone else is at the wheel.
In the past, the forum notably drew attention with a major story surrounding the game “Hogwarts Legacy.” The upcoming Harry Potter game was to be boycotted there – due to hypocrisy.
