Diablo Immortal is controversial, ripped apart in tests, and the Pay2Win model is condemned. However, people are also spending a lot of money in the game. A report now shows that the controversial title has already generated over 100 million US dollars in revenue through mobile – only a major mobile adaptation of a well-known video game can top that.
Diablo Immortal needed a solid foundation after its release to avoid being blown away by the backlash from the press and many players. When it became clear that the initial impressions of the Pay2Win mechanics from the beta were confirmed, the outcry was significant.
However, this could not harm the mobile adaptation of the popular action RPG series Diablo. Diablo Immortal is a top hit for developers Blizzard and NetEase. A report from the big data site “SensorTower” now shows how intense the hit is (via sensortower.com).
100,000,000 US dollars were generated by Diablo Immortal in 8 weeks. Since the euro and dollar are almost at parity currently (July 28, 2022), this also amounts to around 100 million euros.
The discussion about Pay2Win in Diablo Immortal particularly revolves around the Legendary Gems. More about the controversial items can be found in the video:
The report from SensorTower provides more insights and puts the high numbers into perspective.
First: These figures only reflect the revenue from the mobile version of Diablo Immortal on iOS and Android – purchases through the PC beta are not included. Therefore, a good chunk of revenue should still be added to the overall earnings.
Moreover, Diablo Immortal has been in 13th place of all mobile games in terms of revenue since its release. This is enough for 4th place among mobile RPGs and 2nd place among mobile MMORPGs.
The highest revenues are generated by Diablo in the USA, followed by South Korea and then Japan. 59% of the revenue came from Apple’s App Store, while 41% came from the Google Play Store.
Then SensorTower reveals another interesting fact: Diablo Immortal was able to reach the 100 million dollar threshold as quickly as only one other mobile adaptation of a well-known video game series. It is thus in 2nd place in the 100 million dollar race of major gaming brands.
In 1st place, by a wide margin, is a game we also know very well on MeinMMO: Pokémon GO. For the global release hype in 2016, the mobile adaptation of the monster hunt only needed 2 weeks to generate 100 million dollars.
