The actor René Auberjonois has passed away at the age of 79. Many players of the MMORPG Star Trek Online mourn Odo, one of the heroes of their childhood. As a grumpy Constable who could shapeshift, he was an important part of the 90s TV series Deep Space Nine.
René Auberjonois’ son, Remy, told “Entertainment Weekly” that his father died on Sunday. He passed away from lung cancer.
Auberjonois played the character Odo in the TV series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine from 1993 to 1999. He was a complicated, alien character who valued order and duty.
Odo was essential to the well-being of the space station. He served as the moral compass of the series but long felt like an outsider and an oddity.
Fans particularly enjoyed his battles with the Ferengi Quark, who always seemed to be up to something.
In the MMORPG Star Trek Online, players gathered in Odo’s old office on Deep Space Nine to pay their respects. They held up torches.
Even in the 2018 expansion “Victory is Life” of Star Trek Online, Auberjonois could be experienced and heard as Odo in several missions.
Developer Cryptic Games bids farewell to the actor. He was a light in the world, for which we were so grateful.
His colleagues Armin Shimerman (Quark), Nana Visitor (Kira), Alexander Siddig (Julian Bashir) and the now also deceased Aron Eisenberg (Nog) lent their voices to the characters in Star Trek Online.
Auberjonois also starred alongside William “Captain Kirk” Shatner in the lawyer series Boston Legal. He was also seen in the movie “M.A.S.H.”
Auberjonois leaves behind his son Remy and his wife, the writer Judith Auberjonois. They were married for 56 years.
