What could be the next step in the “evolution” of MMORPGs? Virtual reality would be quite an interesting possibility, and with Redemption’s Guild VR, the first virtual reality MMO seems to be on its way.
Redemption’s Guild VR is currently being developed by a small indie studio and is set to be funded through Kickstarter. The online game, in its currently presented form, is not yet comparable to the “big” MMORPGs. The project is too ambitious for the small team, and the technology is still in its infancy. Nevertheless, the developers are trying to convey the feeling of an MMORPG, focusing primarily on the cooperative aspect.
Cooperative adventures in a VR fantasy world
At launch, you will create a hero from six classes and be able to improve this character over 20 levels according to your preferences. The game is played from a first-person perspective, and the team supports HTC’s Vive as the VR headset. Do not expect a massive world yet, but the game offers an open region where you can experience adventures with your friends. There you can expect quests and battles. Additionally, there is an arena where you can fight wave after wave of enemies together. In the labyrinth mode, you and your friends will explore a dungeon filled with traps and must try to retrieve the treasure.
In a tavern, you meet with other players, take care of your equipment and skills, and can even change classes. Since it is a VR game, you are in the middle of the game world. You control with HTC Vive controllers and can freely look around the world through the headset.
A step into the future
Redemption’s Guild VR essentially provides a first glimpse of what VR MMORPGs could eventually become. These are the first steps into an intriguing future. Of course, there is still a long way to go, and yet these beginnings are already quite interesting. If you would like to participate in the funding, you can do so through the Kickstarter campaign, which aims to raise at least $33,000 by November 24.
