The third trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 has been released, giving us many insights into the story. Our analysis of the trailer.
As promised, Rockstar Games released the third trailer for the Western game Red Dead Redemption 2 on May 2. We summarize what it’s about and what stood out.
What is the trailer about?
The viewers are made aware that the second part of Red Dead Redemption takes place in the year 1899. The so-called “Wild West” was almost nonexistent by this time. The trailer states, “We are more ghosts than people.” This underscores that the era of the gunslingers is coming to an end.
Hope dies last: Dutch van der Linde tells his gang not to give up hope. They will not be destroyed.
Criminal acts are part of the game! We see in the trailer a bank heist, an attack on a train, and the stealing of a wagon.
The developers explain that Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee after a failed robbery. They are hunted by bounty hunters. For the gang to survive, they must fight their way through the merciless heart of America.
When the gang is on the verge of falling apart, Arthur must choose between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang he grew up with.
Analysis of the trailer – Fire seems to become important
When does Red Dead Redemption 2 take place? Even before the trailer, it was clear that Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place before Red Dead Redemption. Now we know that the second part takes place twelve years before the first Red Dead Redemption. The first part took place in 1911.
Dutch, the great role model? In the trailer, Dutch speaks to the gang. Trying to keep their faith alive. He seems to be the leader of the gang at this point, whom everyone looks up to. John Marston is back. Players already know this character as the protagonist from Red Dead Redemption. Now it is clear that he also plays a role in the second part. He can be recognized in the trailer by the fresh scars. Perhaps we will even find out in the game where these scars come from. In the following image, you can compare the character in the first and second parts:
Train heists as an important feature: The trailers repeatedly show heists on trains. These seem to be an important feature in the game.
Takedowns / Melee: Rockstar does not rely solely on rifles and pistols in Red Dead Redemption 2. In several places in the new trailer, we see fistfights and melee attacks. So you can probably attack enemies unarmed. Cheering spectators in the trailer also suggest that there might be some kind of mini-game in this context. Preference for fire? Fire is repeatedly referenced in the trailer.
- At the beginning of the trailer, the phrase “A good fire is something to love” can be heard
- Then you hear “Sure, we have fire” and the trailer cuts to a scene in the theater:

- Further it says “And we have the knowledge of fire – but with it comes the realization of the other knowledge” – This is accompanied by a scene with a large fire in a city:

- The trailer ends again with the words “A good fire is something to love”
- It seems that fire will play an important role in Red Dead Redemption 2. It may become an important resource in the new part.
Heists inspired by GTA? Bank or train heists have been shown to us in the trailers. It seems that they may have GTA 5 in mind as a big inspiration since heists are popular in the multiplayer mode there. Rockstar has a good opportunity here to deliver content for the multiplayer (or even with NPCs for singleplayer).
Strong graphics! In the community, the amazing graphics in the new trailer are praised. Fans are already looking forward to an adventure that will apparently be very visually appealing.
A leak says: The open world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is said to offer more depth than the multiplayer of GTA 5
