In the gameplay trailer, we noticed these 16 details about melee combat, weapons, weather, and horses in Red Dead Redemption 2. Did you notice them too?
Look closely: On August 9, the 1st gameplay video for Red Dead Redemption 2 was released. We took a close look and compiled our observations here. Did you see that you can sell weapons and have a special hunter’s instinct?
Will Arthur Morgan be rescued at the start of the story?
Is this really the beginning? Right at the start of the trailer, we see the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur Morgan, in a cramped jail cell with the sheriff. His future does not look bright – the sheriff says that Arthur will be hanged.
Then gang leader Dutch blows a hole in the wall, creating an escape route. The casual tone in which Dutch speaks suggests that the two are already good friends. A possible hint that this scene takes place later in the game and is not the beginning.
Ride together with the gang
Group dynamics: The trailer shows how the gang rides together after escaping from prison. We see this happen quite a few more times in the trailer.
Being present as a group seems to play an important role in Red Dead Redemption 2. Whether you explore the world together or only participate in specific robberies or missions together will remain to be seen.
Buy weapons in the store
Buy your weapons: This marked sign indicates that you can buy weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2. Fans hope that there will be a greater variety of “good” weapons.
The variety of weapons has been criticized as being too limited in Red Dead Redemption.
Melee combat with variety
Fighting from the saloon window: After Arthur is thrown out of a building window, a fight breaks out outside. After a few punches to the face, the two fighters switch sides.
In melee combat, players can expect quite a bit of variety and not monotone boxing.
Dynamic weather with snow, rain, or sun
Deep snow: In this scene, Arthur and Dutch ride through a snowy landscape. The narrator explains that this is a storytelling mission. It seems that there will be plenty of variety in the weather in Red Dead Redemption 2. We’ve already seen snow, rain, and sun.
Everything in overview: Additionally, there is a minimap in the lower left corner that you can use for orientation.
Deadeye is back!
Popular feature: The targeting feature from Red Dead Redemption is also back in Red Dead 2. When Arthur attacks an enemy hideout, time slows down and Arthur can aim at heads one by one in peace.
Lead horse through swamp
Muddy paths: The areas of Red Dead Redemption 2 include rough mountains, dense forests, arid deserts, and muddy swamps. Through the muddy terrain, Arthur walks on foot in the trailer and leads his horse. In the lower right corner, we can see that you can also cancel leading the horse.
Why lead? In which situations leading your horse becomes important is still unclear. The gloomy swamp may suggest that the horse feels insecure and might panic and flee without guidance. Perhaps the animal is simply tired.
Reunion in Blackwater
With theater: Blackwater is the largest town in the state. The theater of Blackwater, the Blackwater Grand Theatre, already played a role in Red Dead Redemption. Players were able to watch a movie for a fee back then. We can also see a theater again in the new trailer.
You meet interesting characters
Colorful personalities: During the adventures in Red Dead Redemption 2, you will likely encounter quirky and distinctive characters.
We see them only briefly in the trailer, but the three men shown do not look like mere boring extras. The description states, “And everywhere you meet various characters from the turn of the century.”
The gentleman at the Tesla coils gets an electric shock in the trailer. His middle part recalls Nikola Tesla himself, the famous inventor.
Change outfits during the game
Unlock or purchase outfits: During the trailer, Arthur’s outfit changes. In this screenshot, he is wearing a leather jacket. It is unclear whether you can unlock different outfits during missions or even buy individual clothing items. Perhaps you can combine them as you wish.
You establish multiple camps – There’s poker
The gang regularly flees: The narrator explains, “Whenever they have to flee an area, the gang sets up a camp as a base.” Sounds like you’ll need to seek refuge often.
With poker: In the camps, you can eat, sleep, and play games. Like poker. As seen in the screenshot, the game is well thought out and has several options. Automatic betting, viewing your own cards, viewing the cards on the table. With your own gang as players, you’d better not have an ace up your sleeve.
You determine how Arthur Morgan is perceived
Your choice: When you encounter NPCs in the open world, you decide how they perceive you.
If you greet them and compliment them, you will be seen as a nice guy. However, you can also be rude and anger them, or draw your weapon. This will lead to a less favorable reputation.
Scare away potential witnesses
Silence them: If you have just committed a crime and were observed? Use weapons or fists to intimidate witnesses. After all, they shouldn’t be singing to the sheriff.
Avoid or provoke conflicts
You don’t have to be everywhere: Just as you can scare away witnesses, you can also look away from other people’s crimes. You can also approach strangers who are looking for trouble and provoke a fight. Or defuse the situation and ignore them.
Horse breeds for different situations
The choice of horse: The trailer explains that some horse breeds are better suited for certain tasks. You will likely choose your companion based on your playstyle. We have already highlighted that the horses play an important role in Red Dead Redemption 2.
The hunter’s instinct as help
Tracking animal tracks: If you are successful hunting wild animals, you can supply your camp with their meat. If you only wound animals, you need to follow their tracks. There seems to be a feature that makes this search easier and highlights the tracks. You can see it in the screenshot.
