If you don’t take good care of your four-legged friend in Red Dead Redemption 2, you could lose him forever.
Horses are an important part of the game in Red Dead Redemption 2. They not only help players get from point A to point B quickly, but players can also build a strong bond with them.
It is even worse when the animal suddenly meets its demise – as horses also experience “Perma Death” in RDR2.
Strong bonds have consequences: The developers want to add more depth to the player’s relationship with their horse by allowing the possibility that the animal can die.
This way, the player feels a real need to take care of their horse and proceed with caution. Of course, you can also customize your horse. Besides that, horses can also drift – yes, really.
Why is there Perma-Death? The developers describe the relationship with horses as follows:
“While you play the game, you take care of the horse and feed it. You calm it when it is scared and encourage it when it is exhausted. You give it a name and care for the animal. You can’t help but feel connected to it. It is your closest, most trusted companion, and you are almost always together.
To cement the strength of this bond, we had to make it vulnerable. Then you respect it and take care of it while playing, making it feel personal and real.”
Animals play a big role: Generally, not only horses but also the entire wildlife in Red Dead Redemption plays a significant role – and there are nearly 200 species.
Certain animals appear in different areas and have their own behaviors. For instance, if one eradicates all crocodiles in an area, they will not be found there for a while. Animals also react differently to the player, either evading or trying to overwhelm them as a pack.
This gives hope to horse lovers: We do not yet know exactly how the “final death” of a horse in Red Dead Redemption 2 will take place. There are supposed to be ways to treat even fatal wounds. Apparently, the loss of a horse is not something that will happen lightly.
What will you do if your horse dies in Red Dead Redemption 2? Start a new game or panic and restart the console hoping it wasn’t saved?
