The game world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is enormous. The game is apparently so large that it has to be delivered on two discs. At least that’s what a Japanese image of the cover suggests.
Rockstar is known for its large open worlds from the GTA series and Red Dead Redemption. However, even by Rockstar’s standards, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a giant of a game.
So large is Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PS4: Recently, we have learned that the PS4 retail version requires around 105 GB of storage. Now a picture of the Japanese cover of the PS4 version reveals that this 105 GB will likely be delivered on two Blu-Rays.
According to the PS Store, the file size of Red Dead Redemption 2 is 89.2 GB for digital download on PlayStation 4.
Update from 17.10., 20:48: English cover images are now also circulating. It is also clear there that Red Dead Redemption 2 “needs two discs”. The symbol is different there, but it still says “two discs”.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is probably the largest game for PS4
Since it became known how much storage space Red Dead Redemption 2 requires on PS4, speculation has arisen about whether it will come to market with multiple discs. At least for the PS4 version, this is now the case.
Does this also affect the Xbox One? So far, only the PS4 cover has been seen. The Xbox One will require 88.6 GB for digital download, which is not quite as much space, but it is not known if multiple discs will be needed here as well.
Why are multiple discs necessary? Standard Blu-ray discs typically hold between 25 and 50 GB of storage space. While there are Blu-rays that offer more than 100 GB of storage, they are not supported by the PS4 or PS4 Pro.
This has never happened before, has it? In fact, there have been some titles in the past that required multiple discs. These include titles such as
- Middle-earth: Shadow of War (over 90 GB on Steam),
- the BioShock Collection
- and Batman: Return to Arkham.
Rockstar’s GTA 5 also had multiple discs on Xbox 360, but these were DVDs.
Players without a fast internet connection probably don’t have to worry about having to download a huge patch at release, as was the case with Black Ops 4.

Big world, long story – this costs a lot of storage
It was to be expected that Red Dead Redemption 2 would require this much space. In addition to the huge game world, which will offer many details, the game also has an extensive story.
How much gameplay will the story take? Talk is of around 65 hours. It was not clearly stated whether this only includes the story or encompasses everything else as well.
Given the size of the game world, it can be assumed that many players will spend significantly more time with RDR2.
