Why is the game so successful right now? One fact that may have contributed to the current success of Red Dead Redemption 2 is the Winter Sale on Steam. This ran from December 22, 2022, to January 5, 2023, and provided players with numerous titles at a special price.
Among them was also Red Dead Redemption 2, which was available for €19.79 and therefore 67% cheaper. This is the lowest price at which players could get the western shooter on Steam (via SteamDB).

The new player count record was set on January 8, 2023: the all-time peak number of players reached 69,134 people.
In addition, Red Dead Redemption is among the top sellers on Steam in the first week of January, ranking 6th. The week before, the game was still in 7th place (via SteamDB), showing an increase here as well.
Reviews on Steam have improved recently
Moreover, the game is still very popular in the Steam community. Of the total 314,653 ratings, 89% are positive.
Looking at the recent reviews, with a volume of 19,959 opinions, these are even slightly better at 92% (as of January 9, 2023, via Steam).
The game generally has a very good reputation, is especially known for its gripping story, and impresses with great graphics. Therefore, the third-person shooter could have attracted many new players at the special price.
