Red Dead Redemption 2 was probably the game of the year 2018. Now it comes a year later for the PC. Our author Schuhmann asks: How should one deal with it?
I really don’t know how to deal with Red Dead Redemption 2 at the moment.
As a PC gamer, I envied those playing on PS4 and Xbox One last year around this time, as they were so excited about the game. They had been looking forward to it for weeks, eagerly absorbing every tidbit of information, every new screenshot.
When it finally arrived, you could feel the excitement resonating through the internet:
- I read about raids by mounted gangs on a moving train.
- Following reports of epic adventures in the prairie.
- I watched clips of cool gun duels and bar brawls.
And I couldn’t do much more without a console in the living room than watch videos and read about what an amazing game I was missing out on.
I missed not only the game of the year 2018 but also a kind of life-changing experience for many.
I missed this experience for economic reasons. Rockstar wanted the “safe box sales” for consoles – without pirates ruining the market on PC. But nobody talks about that.
Now, after a lot of fuss, Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming out in November 2019 for the PC and I am torn.
Game of the Year, but the “new car feeling” is missing
On one hand, I am really excited to finally play Red Dead Redemption 2 because I think it will surely provide me with a great story and gaming experience for 50 hours. I actually know it, as millions of people before me have had that experience.
Moreover, that thing looks fantastic in trailers and my PC is looking forward to playing something different than the RPGs I usually feed it.
On the other hand, I feel like I am almost alone. There is completely no anticipation for a “new game”.
I saw a small advertisement on YouTube, but there was absolutely no feeling: “This is coming out new now”, instead: It’s already been out for a year; you just forgot to buy it.
Moreover, I somehow already know half of the story from what I picked up a year ago.
The new car smell is missing from Red Dead Redemption 2 – it feels a bit like a used car game.
I am curious about how the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 will be, especially emotionally. It is surely one of the biggest releases for PC in gaming 2019 – but it doesn’t feel like it at all.
I hope the excitement comes then while playing.
Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released on Tuesday, November 5, for PC.
