A character editor in Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently dividing the community. Are the characters in Red Dead Online just ugly or realistic? Especially the teeth of the characters are under criticism from players.
The online mode of RDR 2 has entered beta this week and is inviting more and more players to test it. They are confronted with a controversial character editor: Are the characters really ugly, are they realistic, or do players simply need to take enough time to create a decent outlaw?
Teeth under scrutiny
Players criticize dental hygiene: The topic that seems to unite all factions of players appears to be the teeth of the characters in the online mode. While some players believe that crooked and yellow teeth contribute to realism, most are not convinced by the options available: there are only yellowed, half-fallen, rotten, or entirely missing teeth.
Players joke that Dutch van der Linde’s gang in the single-player mode seems to have a good dental insurance plan. Because the outlaws of the gang all had quite respectable teeth.
Community divided over editor
Since the launch of the RDO beta, players have been divided over the character editor of the online mode. While some find everything about the editor terrible, others celebrate the creation tool.
Players find the editor ugly: Some players do not find the editor well-developed or the options too restricted. In their opinion, it is not possible to create good-looking characters.
While all the NPCs look good, the player’s character should stand out uncomfortably in cutscenes. In the opinion of these players, Rockstar should improve the editor.
Players find the editor successful: Again, others celebrate exactly this “ugliness” of the characters. In their opinion, this contributes to the realism of the game. That Rockstar values a realistic world, can also be seen in the game at the horse testicles.
Others believe that you just need to take enough time to create truly unique and pretty figures. In their opinion, players who complain about the editor simply haven’t invested enough time in their character.
Tips for character creation
On Reddit, players have also provided some user tips for character creation. If you take a little time, you should be able to achieve a good result:
- Start with a “clean” base: remove makeup, beards, freckles, etc.
- Choose the hairstyle during creation that allows you to see the face well
- Some categories, such as forehead and eyes or nose, can still be adjusted manually when you select them
- Play around with the individual sliders and remember what they change about your character
- If you are satisfied with the appearance of the face, you can add more details: change the complexion and add moles, freckles, and scars as well as makeup or beards if necessary
- For clothing, keep only the clothes that you actually choose during creation
