After the latest update for Red Dead Online, players are upset. Some content is still missing, rewards for hunters have been cut, and new emotes cost money. This does not sit well with some.
What kind of update is this? On February 26, a major update for Red Dead Online was released that was supposed to unlock a lot of new content. Now players could see the changes. Many are now disappointed with the direction Red Dead Online is taking.
The Problems of the New Red Dead Online Update
This annoys players: In the Red Dead Online community, there is currently a sense of frustration. This is evident in numerous comments on Reddit or even on our site MeinMMO. The new update is met with a lot of criticism.
On Reddit, a thread in the gaming subreddit has already received over 11,000 upvotes. It is titled: “The first major update for Red Dead Online promotes microtransactions while simultaneously cutting the players’ most important sources of income in half.”
Comparisons are made between the content of the patch notes and what is now actually available in Red Dead Online.
The following is criticized:
- One of the two new weapons is labeled as “Coming Soon” in the game and is not yet usable. Although there is already a daily quest for the weapon that players can no longer complete.
- Some of the new clothing items are not available.
- Emotes cost money.
- Hunting activities previously yielded less money, and after the update, only half of that.
Due to the halving of the money rewards for hunting, the new weapons and cosmetic items are practically twice as expensive, it is said. And this annoys players.
The new weapon “Evans Repeater”: In the patch notes it states: “Today, the Red Dead Online Beta receives its first major update with new gameplay, new weapons, and new clothing as well as revised balancing and a number of improvements requested by the community based on feedback on our player feedback page. The update is now available in the game.” Later in the patch notes, it is mentioned that the Evans Repeater is “coming soon.”
Players are annoyed that there is already a daily challenge for the Evans Repeater, but the weapon itself is not available yet. Additionally, there are no indications of the weapon in offline mode. It seems to only be of interest to online players.
Money reduced, important bugs remain: In the aforementioned Reddit thread, it is also stated that new activities are bugged and not available. The bug fixes in the new update were supposed to have fixed issues that led to quick money generation. However, horses continue to reset their bond with the player repeatedly, and beard styles are unavailable.
What Players Say About the New Update
Here we capture a few comments regarding the new update. They also discuss the changes that Rockstar planned against griefers.
MeinMMO reader Frank writes that Rockstar messed up the update:
1. Someone shoots me (griefer), I kill him and he can negotiate.
2. I get shot, I kill him. I get marked red on the map, receive a bounty, and I’m the bad guy.
This update punishes people who stand up to griefers.
With this update, they won’t lure any former players out from behind the stove.
Olli writes on MeinMMO:
Griefers are laughing their heads off. It was a terrible experience yesterday. Entered free roam, went fishing, bang, shot dead. What’s the point of negotiating if I have already been shot and spawn way too far away to resume my “interrupted” activity? Not being able to see players from a distance on the large map only brings the downside that you can no longer choose calmer areas with your buddies and you never know what awaits you.
On the Reddit of Red Dead Redemption there is a thread with 22,000 upvotes titled: “This fucking update made Online even worse.”
In it, the creator complains about the halved hunting rewards and the expensive emotes. He also says that players are now encouraged to grief because one of the daily challenges requires taking out 3 players with headshots.
Player airman 715 writes: They spent more time on the trailer of the update than on the update itself.
Player Baron012 says: If they had just copied RDR1 Online, it would have been 100 times better. Rockstar should either really listen and communicate with players or just ignore multiplayer and focus on story mode DLC like Undead Nightmare.
User YikYakWasBetter writes: “If Rockstar introduces microtransactions for simple things like emotes” and posts this image:
Have you tried the new update yet?
Despite these problems, Red Dead Online has its good sides as well:
