The in-game prices of Red Dead Online are causing players a lot of frustration. Players are annoyed and are asking Rockstar to adjust these prices. Compared to the single player in Red Dead Redemption 2, some items are even 60 times more expensive.
For a few days now, players can enjoy themselves in the online mode of Red Dead Redemption 2. In the beta phase, players are supposed to get a first impression of the multiplayer. Developer Rockstar aims to improve this along with feedback from the community.
According to fans, there is significant need for change in one area: the in-game prices. These are considered too high, and players have to grind too much. The payment for the performance feels unfair.
How expensive are items in Red Dead Online?
The high prices are among the 10 things that bother players the most about Red Dead Online. In Red Dead Online, there are 2 currencies: dollars and gold.
- Dollars can be easily earned in Red Dead Online. You earn them by completing missions, hunting, selling pelts, or through various competitive game modes in Red Dead Online.
- Gold functions as a premium currency. You can use gold bars to buy cosmetic items, unlock certain items earlier, or reset the player’s honor level.
Gold will be available for purchase with real money in the future. Rockstar has not yet disclosed how much the bars will cost and in which packages they can be purchased. In the current beta of Red Dead Online, players can find gold nuggets. These are rewards for completing missions, finding treasures, or for playing PvP modes.
Once players have collected 100 nuggets, they can be turned into a gold bar. Many refer to the effort required to obtain a gold bar as an unnecessary grind.
On Reddit, countless posts can be found stating that the in-game prices are set far too high and that the rewards are far too low. This combination decreases the enjoyment of the game.
Gold prices – “That’s way too much grind!”
How long does it take to farm a gold bar? Players have already calculated how much time it takes to earn a gold bar. User UnavailableIDs came to the conclusion that it takes just over 8 hours to earn one of these coveted gold bars.
How much do the items cost? Some things can only be purchased with gold bars in Red Dead Online. And some of them are really expensive. On Reddit, a user explains that it costs 30 gold bars to gild all metals of a weapon. With 8 hours of gameplay per gold bar, that would mean at least 10 full days of playtime.

The first horse you receive can be insured for free. Future horses will cost a one-time fee of 5 gold bars for insurance. Horse insurance automatically heals horses after they die. Horses without insurance must wait a 2-minute cooldown after death, and there is a small fee to heal them. It’s a practical feature, but it costs a lot of gameplay hours.
The monetary prices are disproportionate
Players also criticize the dollar prices. On Reddit, user ConvictedWaffles writes, “A gold wedding ring is sold for $1.15. A can of baked beans costs $1.50. I think we should give Rockstar some feedback.”
Many players complain about the increased dollar prices compared to the single player. User HassanZ42 asks, “How can it be justified that the Mauser pistol costs $225 in single player and $1000 in online mode?” He would understand raising prices slightly to prevent players from becoming overpowered too quickly. But that a weapon costs 4.4 times more is “damn ridiculous.” He adds, “If no reliable method for earning money or an exploit arises, I see the online mode as dead for me and many others.”
User Arch27 writes: “There’s a plain white t-shirt that costs $5 in single player and $60 in multiplayer. I think a slight price increase is okay, but 12 times the price of single player?”
Ongoing costs are too high: Players also complain about the costs that arise incidentally. The bills for the camp or the stable regularly deduct money. “Automated deductions of around $1.75 or so are made from your account. That’s almost as much as some missions pay. If you are not currently earning money in Red Dead Online, it disappears at a frightening speed,” writes user Dreary_Libido.
Fans draw comparisons to GTA Online
The online mode of Red Dead Redemption 2 is repeatedly compared to the online mode of GTA 5. “GTA Online also has ongoing costs,” it is said, “but these were negligible because you simply possess so much more money.”
In GTA Online, missions and heists pay out thousands of dollars to millions. However, there is no premium currency in GTA Online. Everything is paid for with the same currency. This made it easy for players to develop methods to quickly earn money in GTA 5 Online. They can then use that to pay for the expensive cars and properties in GTA Online.
Yet players are also dissatisfied with the grind in GTA Online and say that everything is expensive there.

Will Rockstar change the prices?
Players hope that now, through their feedback, they will get Rockstar to make the in-game prices of Red Dead Online more reasonable.
What do the fans want? There is a general consensus that good weapons should not simply be “handed out”. However, it should be worthwhile to play. Players should not be punished for playing by having camps and stables potentially making them poor.
