What was the situation?
Marvel Heroes was released in 2013 for PC – it was a kind of “Diablo MMO with a Marvel license,” equipped with superheroes and supervillains.
The game was in a “raw” state. The reactions were disastrous.
The action MMO, created by Diablo inventor David Brevik, had problems with virtually everything: it was buggy, the gameplay was unremarkable, and there was too little content. Marvel Heroes looked more like a cheap browser game at release than a high-quality title.
The game is much more comprehensive and refined than at release, presenting a higher quality. However, there wasn’t really a major break here, only a steady improvement along with the name change.
Gazillion is internally proud of the improvement. They view it as a part of their identity, proving that they managed to turn things around, reflecting how much they love the Marvel universe and its fans. The studio sees itself as a kind of “underdog” that has shown its worth, even when the winds have been icy.
