The Hi Rez Studios worked on a new mode called Battlegrounds for the online shooter Paladins. This has now been reannounced as a standalone game Realm Royale. The concept is similar to Fortnite, but there are some crucial differences.
In January, the development studio sent out invites for a first test of Paladins Battlegrounds. In February, they even started an open alpha test. Although everything had already kicked off, the team pulled the emergency brake at the last moment and retracted Paladins Battlegrounds to decouple and revise the mode from Paladins.
It is now clear: The existing game Paladins will not simply receive a battle royale mode; the gameplay will be released as a standalone game Realm Royale.
This title, according to the developers, differs significantly from what was originally planned.

An exciting crafting system
Originally, Paladins Battlegrounds was a battle royale game similar to Fortnite, only that you could play as the existing heroes from Paladins with their different skills and traits. Additionally, you should be able to find items in the game that improve abilities and stats.
Now, however, a new variant of the battle royale is planned.
The new features include an interesting crafting system:
- On the map, you collect loot in the form of weapons and armor
- You can disassemble each item into shards
- Collect 100 shards and visit a forge with them
- There, you craft legendary weapons with unique abilities
- Players can guard forges, making them highly contested locations
- Loot can be stolen, leading to ambushes on the way to the forges
- Even loot you would otherwise ignore should be interesting with the crafting system

Map with different climate zones
Currently, not much is known about Realm Royale. The testers who have already played are not allowed to talk about it yet.
A map of the gameplay area shows, however, that it is divided into five zones, which also offer different climate zones. In the north, for example, the icy land Everfrost can be seen.
Will you no longer be able to play the heroes from Paladins?
It is currently unclear whether Realm Royale will keep the specific heroes with their skills from Paladins. Originally, that was the plan.
New screenshots now look even more like Fortnite – the various heroes and skills may have been removed. Since Realm Royale is still under an NDA, everything is a bit opaque.
