In the week from March 8 to March 14, a lot has happened in the MMORPGs. In this post, we would like to briefly summarize everything important.
The highlight of the week: On March 8, the new update 29 was released in The Elder Scrolls Online. This included two new dungeons and a major overhaul of the Champion Points. The latter makes the game particularly more interesting for newcomers and is also intended to strengthen performance.

The controversy of the week: After the publisher Gamigo already announced last week the shutdown of several MMOs, it has now been revealed that developers of the game RIFT were laid off.
However, a shutdown of the game is not planned for now. You can find out more about the layoffs here.
The MMORPG discussion of the week: In a special, we discussed the future of MMORPGs this week. We put forward the thesis that a new hit must not be like WoW.

New updates for WoW and GW2
This week’s happenings with the big 5:
- In World of Warcraft, patch 9.0.5 was released. This brought a system for upgrading items, some bug fixes, and also 10 hidden changes.
- In Guild Wars 2, the latest chapter of Living World Season 5 was released. This brought new story, missions, achievements, and rewards. We spoke with the developers about the future of the MMORPG.
- In Black Desert, a new PvP tournament was announced (via Pearl Abyss). It is called “The Best of Classes”. Detailed information is yet to be published.
- In Final Fantasy XIV, it was relatively quiet. However, during the period from March 4 to March 10, thousands of accounts were banned due to real-money trading (via Square Enix).
- With the new update in ESO, a hidden feature for character selection was added that makes your characters cry.
What’s happening with the smaller MMORPGs?
- The Lord of the Rings Online has released a roadmap for the contents of 2021, including the new update 30 in summer (via LOTRO).
However, LOTRO is now silent about the PS5 release - In Dark Age of Camelot, there was a level event. In it, “thousands of characters” were said to have been created (via Massivelyop).

What’s new with the indie MMORPGs?
- The Kickstarter MMORPG Titan Reach officially launched in Early Access on March 9.
- Legion: The Eternal War is a new crowdfunding MMORPG that aims to focus heavily on castle battles. It has been in development for 3 years and now aims to raise $200,000.
- The heads of Saga of Lucimia, an interesting PvE MMORPG, are working on a new project. However, the development of Saga of Lucimia is said to continue without them (via Patreon).
- Ashes of Creation has postponed its alpha launch by more than a month. The start is now not until mid-May.
