In the GSA League playoffs of Rainbow Six Siege, the best teams from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland compete for the title and €10,000 prize for first place. The semifinals have already been decided, and the analyst from one of the winning teams revealed how they achieved their victory.
Who are the pros? G2 Esports is one of the teams in the GSA League and is also one of the top teams in the world in Rainbow Six Siege. They are an international team based in Berlin and play many other titles in addition to Rainbow, such as the newly released Valorant.
In the GSA League, they have made it to the top 4 teams and are therefore competing in the current playoffs against three other teams:
- Team Secret
- Rogue
- DIVIZON (already eliminated)
What is the strategy? In the semifinals, which took place on Saturday, September 12, the pros faced newcomers DIVIZON. They employed a strategy known as “Bait and Switch”.
This broadly means that a specific strategy (such as aggressive or defensive play) is used until the opponent has adapted to it, only to abruptly switch to the opposite. G2 analyst Kevin “Sua” Stahnke explained in an interview after the match how G2 Esports implemented the strategy:
“Bait and Switch” – The Professionals’ Strategy
This is how it works: It fundamentally involves playing a certain tactic until the opponent feels confident in handling it and responding. You build on the assumption that opponents feel secure in defeating you.
In G2’s case, the team played the first rounds aggressively on the second map, Villa. They constantly pressured the opponents and gave them little time to react.
This continued over the first four rounds, with the fourth round even ending in just a few seconds due to a hard attack and an offensive exchange. The clip shows almost the entire round, which started just a few seconds ago:
After that, the pros from G2 Esports drastically slowed down their playstyle, causing the newcomers to respond completely incorrectly to their new strategy. They had to give up some rounds to achieve victory in the game itself.
What are the advantages? You confuse your opponent, bringing them out of their rhythm and potentially forcing them into tactics that don’t suit them. This affects the opponents’ morale and can give you some easy wins.
“Bait and Switch” is particularly useful against less experienced teams that either have not trained as much or cannot quickly respond to new situations. Therefore, it’s crucial that you can coordinate well with your own team.
If you can communicate well with your team and know that the opponents are somewhat randomly assembled, you should have good chances of success. Since the start of Season 3 on September 10, there is the Squad Finder with which you can assemble your own team for exactly such strategies.
The full match of G2 Esports against DIVIZON is embedded here for you, starting the video at 4:02:14. The second map with the corresponding strategy begins around 5:01:45:
What are the disadvantages? The strategy requires training and discipline to consistently change the tactic from one round to the next. You need a lot of communication, which is the key to victory.
Moreover, it does not work against flexible teams that can quickly adapt to new situations. G2 Esports, for example, lost their second match against the pros from Rogue, who have already qualified for the final.
