Michelle Yeoh starred mainly in numerous martial arts films in the 80s and 90s and even performed her own stunts. She would have actually been the perfect casting for Kill Bill because director Quentin Tarantino is a big fan of her martial arts – but he rejected her for a reason.
What connects Tarantino and Yeoh? Yeoh recounts on The Graham Norton Show on YouTube that she had a serious accident on the set of The Stunt Woman in 1996. She was pushed too hard by an edge and fell awkwardly onto the ground.
Afterward, Yeoh had to recover from her injuries. At that time, she was going through a depressive phase and considered quitting acting in action films. At the same time, however, Tarantino traveled to Hong Kong and visited the injured Yeoh at her home.
According to Yeoh, Tarantino reignited her passion for action films. When the director shared how he was inspired by Yeoh’s films and what a big fan he was, she reportedly became very excited. The actress realized that one should not give up something they love.
Yeoh would have been the perfect opponent in Kill Bill. You can find the trailer for it here:
Michelle Yeoh did not appear in Kill Bill, even though Tarantino is a fan of hers
So why wasn’t she allowed to play in Kill Bill? 7 years after The Stunt Woman, Tarantino’s major film hit Kill Bill – Volume 1 was released. Despite the film becoming known for its martial arts scenes and Tarantino being a big fan of Yeoh, the actress did not feature in the film.
When Yeoh approached the director about it, he reportedly responded: That’s so off-putting. No one would believe that Uma Thurman could kick your ass.
Thurman played the lead role in Kill Bill and seeks revenge against her enemies in the film. If Yeoh had been one of the antagonists, it would have been unbelievable for Tarantino that Thurman could defeat Yeoh with her martial arts talent.
Why would Yeoh have been the perfect casting? The actress has a long career to look back on. While she is currently seen in somewhat quieter films like Wicked, she used to fight in numerous action and martial arts films like James Bond 007 – Tomorrow Never Dies and Yes, Madam.
With her years of experience in showbiz and her martial arts talent, she would have been the perfect casting for a fighter in Kill Bill. But as Tarantino already said, it would probably not have been believable if Thurman had defeated her in combat, even though she had less experience with martial arts films.
Aside from Kill Bill, Quentin Tarantino has released other films. Unfortunately, Yeoh has not been able to appear in any of them. The quality of the films is showcased in the ultimate ranking on MeinMMO: All 9 films by Quentin Tarantino ranked – Which is the best?
