There are developers who do not like to see others “copying” their games or getting inspired by them. The developers of Monster Hunter World see it differently.
What do the MHW developers say? In an interview with Kotaku, the developers of Monster Hunter: World commented on games that adopt many aspects and systems from Monster Hunter.
The director Kaname Fujioka said:
I am absolutely happy and proud that our game has become big enough that other people get inspired by it and create their own games.
According to Fujioka, all developers have been influenced by the games they played. It is definitely not something he is angry or upset about, said the director. A lawsuit over copyright, as in the case of PUBG vs. Fortnite, is therefore out of the question.
In the past, it has happened several times that after the success of Monster Hunter in Japan, games have appeared that use the same basic idea. This includes titles like God Eater or Soul Sacrifice.

It is therefore not surprising that after the great success of Monster Hunter: World in the West, even more developers are getting inspired by the concept of the game.
This is Dauntless: The free-to-play game from Phoenix Labs shares many core mechanics with Monster Hunter:
- You hunt large monsters in the game.
- You obtain resources from these monsters to craft new equipment.
- Monsters have various resistances and weaknesses that can be exploited.
- Fights require longer preparation.

Of course, Dauntless is not an absolute “copy” of Monster Hunter: World, as is often the case with Chinese clones of popular games.
- The graphic style of Dauntless differs drastically from the style in Monster Hunter World.
- The combos and attacks of the weapons in Dauntless are somewhat more agile, while in Monster Hunter World they are mostly sluggish.
- The monsters in Dauntless often possess “magical” attacks, utilizing the power of shadows and darkness.
However, the similarities between the two games are noticeable at first glance in videos, which does not bother the MHW developers much.
