In PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PC, Xbox One), a continually shrinking play zone forces players to become more confined. To increase the action even further, the mechanics of this “blue zone” have been altered on the test server.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is a battle royale game where 100 players fight against each other on an 8×8 kilometer map. To ensure the rounds are not boring and that there are always enough players encountering and killing each other, the play area becomes smaller and smaller.
This is ensured by a blue play zone, a type of electric field that gradually contracts. Any player standing in the field takes damage continuously. The longer the game lasts, the stronger the damage from the zone.
The new zone is intended to enhance mid-game
In theory, the zone should ensure that players do not camp endlessly in the vegetation or search for opponents forever. However, especially in mid-game, this often did not work out. While wild skirmishes take place at the beginning and end of the game, the interim phase was often rather boring and relaxed.
The developers want to change this by adjusting the parameters of the zone on the test server. The following rules now apply to the zone:
- The “waiting time” of the zone has been slightly reduced in mid to late game. This refers to the time between two zone contractions.
- The zone moves slightly slower in mid to late game, but covers a slightly larger distance.
- The last zone inflicts more damage
The developers want to keep these changes on the test server for a few days and closely monitor how the game pace changes. However, this is only one aspect that the developers are currently testing to enable more exciting matches in PUBG in the future.
