On this page, we will provide you with 6 tips that you should definitely know as a beginner. These tips have been compiled from personal experience and in consultation with players who have collectively played almost 5,000 hours of PUBG.
If you pay attention to these tips, you should soon regularly have “Chicken Dinner” on your menu.
Tip 1: When should I shoot and when not?
PUBG is primarily a Battle Royale, not a Team Deathmatch. Your survival is therefore more important than your kill count.
Therefore, be choosy with the fights you engage in. Ammunition and medications are relatively rare in PUBG, so you want to waste as little as possible unnecessarily. Additionally, by shooting prematurely and hastily, you expose your position due to the noise, and worst-case scenario, you may not even hit the enemy.
Always ensure that you only shoot under 5 circumstances. These can occur individually or in combination:
- Your opponent has seen you, so they are either aiming at you or have already started shooting.
- If a player has not noticed you yet, you should be very sure that you can hit and kill them.
- You have a clear advantage over the opponent, such as being in a better position or outnumbering them.
- You are very sure that you cannot be surprised by other opponents nearby.
- After the firefight, you can safely and quickly escape, for example, with a vehicle.
Tip 2: Be careful and patient when aiming
The weapons in PUBG behave very realistically. Your movements, long distances, and heavy bullets make it difficult to hit the opponent as desired. Therefore, always be as careful and patient as possible when aiming. This is especially important because a good headshot, even in a difficult position, can make you the winner.
Try to stand as still as possible when aiming. Also pay attention to gravity and learn to judge how long your bullets take to hit and what trajectory they take. Therefore, especially at greater distances, do not shoot directly at the opponent. Instead, aim in the direction they are running and aim a little higher.
Learn how to properly use scopes as well. This image shows you how to use the information of a 4x scope to your advantage:
How exactly you need to aim also depends on the weapon you are firing. That’s why the next tip is very important.
Tip 3: Learn the weapons and their best ranges
To gather more kills in PUBG, it is incredibly important to know your weapons well. This includes not only an understanding of each weapon’s recoil but also more fundamental things like their ammunition type or the compatibility of attachments.
A shotgun, for example, will not help you at range. Learn especially to estimate distances accurately and to know which weapon you should use. The map can help with this: a white box corresponds to 100 square meters.
You can also set scopes with greater zoom to the correct distance. This helps immensely in fighting at long range, which you will be doing quite often.
When you set a scope to the correct distance, you no longer have to guess how far above an opponent’s head you need to shoot. Try to set the scope to the same distance you are away from the opponent. This way, you can shoot accurately regardless of the distance, exactly where your sight is pointing.
This is how you set the scopes to the correct distance:
- PC: Press PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN while aiming.
- Console: Press the Up/Down on the D-pad while aiming.
You can quickly and easily try out all weapons in training mode. We recommend spending some time there if you want to improve. While you can also do this in a match, it is a much more frustrating and slower learning method.
Don’t forget to switch the firing mode as well. An AKM is significantly easier to use at range in single-fire mode than fully automatic.
Tip 4: Sound is extremely important
The audio in PUBG is excellent and very important. You can use the sounds of footsteps, shots, engine noises, doors, or broken windows not only to accurately assess the direction of opponents but also, with some experience, the distance.
This also works the other way: Always be aware of how many noises you are currently making and whether an opponent could hear you. Try to always reload your weapon early—reloading also makes noise. Even breathing while aiming can be heard.
You can use these sounds to identify how many opponents are nearby and where. At the same time, they can also reveal your position. Therefore, it is extremely important to be cautious and listen actively in PUBG.
A good headset can be very helpful and is therefore a significant investment.
Tip 5: Where should I land?
At the start of each match, immediately open the map. Then make a strategic decision on where you want to land. Most players will likely land at a named location directly in the flight path of the plane.
If you follow these players, you should try to land where you expect the most loot. The rooftops of buildings also provide you with an informational and positional advantage right from the start.
If you want less action, you can also land far away from this flight path. Pull your parachute early and let yourself drift away. At unmarked locations, you usually have less good loot and a much slower start. However, do not forget to pay attention to the ring and the zone.
However, we recommend not completely avoiding landings in heavily visited areas. These “hot drops” are risky, but they also give you the best chance at good loot. Surviving a hot drop often means you can survive the entire match.
Another advantage of hot drops: Since you are in the action early and immediately, hot drops are excellent tests of fire. This way, you can quickly and enjoyably learn your PUBG skills. This includes effective looting, good weapon handling, and movement.
This method allows you to learn the game faster than if you wander around alone in the landscape for minutes before your first fight. In exchange, continuous hot dropping may require considerable frustration resistance.
Tip 6: Always pay attention to the blue zone and the white ring
At all times during a round, pay attention to where the blue zone and the white ring are. You can find this information on both the minimap and the large map.
If you are too far from the zone, it can quickly become an issue. Especially if you loot for too long or are held up by an opposing team. Being inattentive here can quickly lead to a very annoying death.
So try to always stay on the move when you are not in the zone. Also, keep an eye out for vehicles in case you cannot make it on foot—just don’t forget that an engine is loud.
Resist the temptation to search every building for good loot: The best weapon won’t help you if you have to bite the dust without opponent influence.
