The PS5 Slim is a new model of the PS5. MeinMMO presents the similarities and differences between the Slim and the regular PS5.
PS5: What models are available? Since November 2023, the Slim version of the PS5 has officially been available on the market. This means that both the old PS5 from 2020 and the new Slim model are currently available. However, Sony has already stated that the old PS5 will gradually disappear from the market and only the PS5 Slim will be sold.
Additionally, there will still be details and small differences between the PS5 versions. MeinMMO presents the differences between the PS5 Slim and the regular PS5.

PS5 Slim: The main changes
The essentials at a glance:
- The PS5 Slim was released at the end of 2023 and will gradually replace the previous model. The old model will disappear from the market.
- The PS5 Slim is delivered with more storage space (820 GB vs 1 TB).
- Both consoles (Slim, Normal) can be purchased as a model with a drive or without a drive (Digital Edition).
- The PS5 Slim is smaller, slimmer, and lighter than the original PS5.
- The PS5 Slim uses different side panels, so the old panels are not compatible.
- The PS5 Slim does not offer a technical upgrade compared to the first model. There is no better performance.

New side panels and appearance
Sony has given the PS5 a new look. There are now 2 panels on each side, separated by a diagonal black stripe. Therefore, you cannot use the official side plates from Sony for the PS5 as they no longer fit.
Sony also offers the new panels in the shop, and the price and colors are identical.
Larger storage
The Slim model has more storage. The official PS5 from 2020 offered 825 GB, of which you could use about 600 GB for games, save files, and applications.
The PS5 Slim comes with 1 TB of storage. You can use about 800 GB of this.

Additional USB-C port
Sony has changed the ports on the PS5 Slim: There are now 2 USB-C ports on the front of the PS5 Slim, which you can use to charge or connect devices. The regular PS5 features one USB-A and one USB-C port.
On the back, both consoles are identical: There are 2 USB-A ports, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and the power cable socket.
Lighter and smaller
The PS5 is considered the largest next-gen console on the market: With dimensions of 390 mm x 104 mm x 260 mm, there is no larger gaming console. The old PS5 with a drive weighs 4.5 kg.
Compared to the first version, the PS5 Slim shrinks somewhat and becomes significantly lighter: the new dimensions are now only 358 mm x 96 mm x 216 mm. The new PS5 “Slim” weighs only 3.2 kg. The model without a drive weighs only 2.6 kg.
Upgradable drive
With the Slim variant, you also get to decide whether you want to buy a PS5 with a drive or the Digital Edition without a drive.
The special feature of the Slim model group is that you can upgrade the Digital Edition of the Slim with a drive. The drive costs a one-time fee of 129.99 Euros. Stand included only for an added cost
The regular PS5 includes a stand in the package if you want to set the PS5 up vertically.
With the PS5 Slim, it’s different: Here, Sony not only changed the stand but also removed it from the package of the PS5. If you want to set your PS5 vertically, you have to buy an additional stand for 29.99 Euros. The old stand from the previous edition is not compatible because the PS5 has become slimmer.
PS5 Slim does not offer more performance than the old PS5
Is the PS5 Slim better? The new PS5 Slim is lighter, smaller, and consumes slightly less power. However, the new model is not faster, as Sony has not installed new hardware. It still features the same chip from AMD. Therefore, an upgrade is not really worthwhile, as you do not get any more performance.
