For just over a week, the next-gen upgrade for GTA 5 Online has been available. However, looking at the ratings on Metacritic, it seems that the sentiment has not improved significantly.
What’s going on with GTA 5 Online? For several days now, players can play GTA Online on its third console generation. The over 8-year-old game has received a upgrade version for PS5 and Xbox Series X | S – and has faced mixed feelings since its recent release.
Shortly after the upgrade was launched, players debated whether it was a terrible or good upgrade. The criticism: while it does bring some better technology, with nicer graphics and faster controls, there is not much else to it.
Checking Metacritic reveals an even harsher picture: the user score is currently deep in the red.
Much Criticism on Metacritic
Metacritic collects reviews and ratings from various sources and compiles them into an average score.
The first score (from 0 to 100) is based on critics such as magazines. The second score, the “user score,” ranges from 0 to 10 and is based on user ratings.
And here a strong contrast emerges:
- The Metascore for the PS5 version, based on 13 reviews, looks good at 82. However, the user score is stuck in the red at just 2.2.
- For the Xbox Series X version, the critic score is 77, based on 5 reviews. But here too, the user score is just 2.2.
In short: users seem anything but enthusiastic about the upgrade version (via Metacritic).
Here, the criticism is also quite clear: apparently, players have simply grown tired of GTA 5 and are longing for something new. They expected more from the upgrade:
- “Nothing new added. Don’t waste your money. Spend it on a new game and continue playing the PS4 version,” it says, for example.
- “The same game with slightly better resolution and higher FPS count. This isn’t even a remaster, it’s more like a patch that you’re expected to pay for,” says another.
However, there are also voices defending the upgrade:
- “There are probably only a handful of people who haven’t played this game yet, and if they haven’t, this is the best version to play on console. It looks great considering its age, and it plays better in performance RT mode than previous generations.”
Whether the user score will recover remains to be seen. Ultimately, everyone will likely know what to expect from GTA 5.
What remains unknown, however, is what might be in the much-anticipated successor to the game. But in early 2022, there was at least a sign of life from GTA 6.
