The DualSense controller of the PlayStation 5 is already receiving a lot of praise from the first testers – especially for its features. However, the design is also impressive, even under the microscope. Upon closer inspection, a cool detail can be seen, which is supposed to provide better grip.
What is the DualSense all about? In short, Sony’s new next-gen console PlayStation 5 is launching soon. It comes with a new input device, the DualSense controller.
Since Sony has already provided some media representatives and influencers with the PS5 in advance and the accessories are already available in the USA, some have already been able to try out the new controller – and the first testers are excited about the technology of the PS5 controller.
However, the design and attention to detail are also praised for the DualSense. Why, as shown by Reddit user Thenadamgoes, who simply grabbed a microscope attachment and took a closer look at the surface of the PS5 controller.
Grip surface made of small PlayStation symbols
This is what the detail is about: A cool design detail comes to light. Although it doesn’t necessarily require a microscope to see it, it only becomes apparent upon closer inspection. Therefore, many may have completely overlooked it until now.
The surface of the DualSense is textured – but not just with a random grain or pattern, but with the traditional PlayStation symbols triangle, cross, circle and square, which you can also find on the buttons.
Here you can see the symbols: Under the microscope, it looks spectacular:
However, if you zoom in closely enough, it can also be recognized in normal pictures:
There are two layers of symbols. The two layers are highlighted differently.
What is the point? On the one hand, the textured surface is supposed to provide more grip, meaning more hold in the players’ hands. On the other hand, some suspect that Sony wants to make it harder for counterfeits and cheap copies. Because such a texture would not really be easy to replicate.
By the way, according to some comments in the corresponding threads, the faceplates, meaning the removable side covers of the PS5, are said to display this pattern – in the opinion of some users for the same reason.
This is now different from the first images: That the new controller has a textured surface is not really new. This was already visible in some high-resolution images in mid-June. However, back then, some thought it might possibly be a showcase device, and that the final product might look different.
While the texture apparently remains, it still differs between the first images and the current DualSense. The old pictures show that the texture was engraved, meaning it went inward, and had only one layer. The current images show that the texture of the release version now has multiple layers and extends outward from the surface.
What do you think of this detail? Cool idea or unnecessary gimmick? What wishes and hopes do you have for the new controller? Shooter expert Sven Galitzki from MeinMMO hopes, that it won’t be as harsh on the new PS5 controller as it was for the PS4.
