If you own a PS5 and want to download a large game or install an update, you are dependent on your internet connection. But sometimes not everything works as it should:
- Your favorite series stream is not running smoothly on the PS5.
- The large update for your game takes forever, even though your internet connection is officially much faster.
- Or your PS5 suddenly won’t connect to the network, even though your phone and PC are having no issues.
MeinMMO presents you with tips and tricks on what you can do about slow internet and which problems you can resolve.
Turn off and restart your console
As simple as it may sound: The easiest and fastest tip for most electronic devices is a restart. Because during a restart or a complete shutdown, the non-volatile memory (RAM) of your PS5 or PC is cleared. If any data has caused problems, they are then gone.
Make sure to properly turn off the PS5 and do not go into rest mode. Then turn your PS5 back on as usual. For safety reasons, you should regularly turn off your PS5. You can find more about it on MeinMMO explained:
Restart or reset the router
Restarting the router: Are you experiencing internet issues not only on your PS5 but also on your PC or smartphone? Then it might be worth restarting your router.
A restart can often resolve annoying problems and errors that cannot be fixed on a software level.
Resetting the router: In rare cases, it might be advisable to reset the router. But beware: In this case, all settings and data you have entered on the router will be lost. This includes voicemail, phone books, and other things.
So, make a backup of your important data beforehand. Unless you are absolutely sure that the error is due to a faulty setting or you do not need your data.
Install all important updates for your PS5 and router
As a general rule, we recommend that you install all important updates for your PS5 and your router. Updates close security gaps and provide more stability. In some cases, the connection to Wi-Fi also improves.
For your router, we would recommend checking the official manual or the notice from your internet provider. Sometimes, branded routers from the internet provider (O2, Vodafone, Telekom) are provided directly and automatically with updates.
Install current updates on the PS5
- Automatic installation:
- Open the settings on your PS5, then go to “System” and then under “System Software Update and Settings”
- Here you go to the menu item “System Software Update and Settings”.
- In this window, you can then enable “Automatically download update files” and “Automatically install update files”.
- Manual installation:
- Open the settings on your PS5, then go to “System” and then under “System Software” to the item “System Software Update and Settings”.
- If a new PS5 update is available, it will be displayed under “Update available”.
- To install the latest version, you need to select “Update System Software” by yourself.
Shorten the connection between PS5 and router or use a cable
Another possibility for a slow connection can be the distance between the console and PS5. Obstacles, such as thick concrete walls or furniture, can also interfere with the connection. If you have the option, shorten the distance between the router and PS5.
The best option: Use a LAN cable to connect your console directly to the router. Depending on how far the distance is between the router and PS5, the cable connection can sometimes be difficult or even impossible.
Switch from 2.4 GHz network to 5 GHz
In some cases, it may be worth switching from the 2.4 GHz wireless network to 5 GHz. Generally, the frequency band selection is set to automatic and will then select 2.4 GHz.
However, switching to 5 GHz is only worth it if the PS5 and console are close enough together. And this is simply due to technology:
- The 2.4 GHz band offers a greater range but is often heavily loaded and more prone to possible interference.
- The 5 GHz band offers a higher speed but has less range and is often less loaded and less prone to interference.
If your PS5 is far from the router, it may not benefit from the faster and more stable network.
In order for your PS5 to connect with 5 GHz, your router must also support 5 GHz and have it activated. It is best to check the manual of your router for how to activate this. Depending on the model and software, this can vary significantly.
Switch on the PS5 from 2.4 to 5 GHz:
- Open the settings of your PS5 by pressing the gear icon.
- Navigate to Network and open the settings.
- Click on Set up internet connection.
- Select the connection you are currently using and press the options button on your DualSense controller to access the settings.
- Go to “Wi-Fi frequency band” and select “5 GHz”.
- Your PS5 should now disconnect from the Wi-Fi and reconnect with 5 gigahertz.
Change internet connection or DNS address
A popular trick to speed up the internet on the PS5 is changing the DNS address. DNS stands for Domain Name System and it is what the internet uses to find and translate IP addresses. Anyone wanting to connect to the internet cannot avoid this.
In particular, Google’s DNS server is considered very fast and can give your PS5 the needed boost to improve internet speed. With the following settings, you can change your PS5’s DNS address to Google’s:
- Open the settings of your PS5 by pressing the gear icon.
- Navigate to Network and open the settings.
- Click on Set up internet connection.
- Select the connection you are currently using and press the options button on your DualSense controller to access the settings.
- Switch to the “Advanced Settings” here.
- In the following menu, enter the following data:
- IP address settings: Automatic.
- DHCP host: Do not specify.
- DNS configuration: Manual.
- Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
- Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4
- Proxy server: Do not use.
- MTU settings: Automatic.
Your PS5 should now connect via Google’s DNS servers in the future. Ideally, restart your console once again.
Start large downloads when others are not using the internet
Some routers offer features like Multi User MIMO (MU-MIMO): Here multiple devices can be “processed” at the router simultaneously. In the “Single User” method, all devices are processed one after the other. This second method is often used by cheaper routers.
If you have many devices in your household, the internet can quickly become overloaded. It may be worth downloading the large update for Destiny 2 or Call of Duty at a time when not all devices in the household are using the internet.
If many devices are connected to Wi-Fi at the same time, the router may become overloaded. This leads to a loss of signal strength as the router struggles to provide a strong enough internet connection for all devices at once. If you want to play online, turn off a few devices that you do not need at the moment.
