According to a patent, the PlayStation 5 could receive a special feature at launch. Specifically, it concerns Auto-HDR, which is supposed to significantly improve brightness and colors.
According to a patent that has been filed with the Japanese Patent Office, the PlayStation 5 could get “Auto-HDR” at launch. Many games could benefit from this graphics feature as they will look better.
What is “Auto-HDR”? HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, which means a high dynamic range. It ensures a larger range of brightness values and colors to be rendered. This significantly improves light details and adds depth. As a result, images appear fuller and deeper compared to Standard Dynamic Range.
Where does the information come from? Roberto Serrano first drew attention to it via Twitter:
Here, images were also shown of how Auto-HDR could look on the PlayStation 5.
Has this technology been used before? For example, on the PS4 Pro, Marvel’s Spider-Man already supported this feature. However, it has not yet been mentioned for the PS5. If you are playing on your PS4 Pro or PS4 and have problems with volume, we have 6 helpful tips for you:
The PS5 could get Auto-HDR – the Xbox can already do it
Why is this surprising? Sony repeatedly announces surprising individual features or special aspects of its new next-gen console. Recently, they finally presented the user interface of the PlayStation 5. It is indeed likely that Sony has a few surprises in store for its fans.
Where does the Xbox Series X|S stand? In contrast to the PS5, the Xbox Series X|S will definitely support “Auto-HDR”. Even older games that previously had no HDR support will be able to support it and look significantly better.
We still do not know whether old games on the PlayStation 5 could also support Auto-HDR like on the Xbox Series X|S.
PS5 pre-order pickup in-store
By the time of the PS5 launch on November 12th and 19th in Germany, we should know whether Auto-HDR is included. However, many need to pick up their pre-ordered PS5 from the local dealer first. Not everyone will have the PlayStation 5 delivered to their home. Meanwhile, Sony’s chief has stated that the PlayStation 4 will still be supported for a long time.
