Soon, it should be possible for PSN users to finally change their online name. In this context, Sony is currently inviting participation in the PlayStation Network Online ID Change Preview. At the same time, however, potential test candidates are warned about possible side effects.
The first emails with invitations to test the long-awaited name change for the PlayStation Network have been sent out. This is now being reported by some PlayStation users on the discussion platform ResetEra. The closed test of the feature is part of the System Software 6.10 Preview for the PS4.
Sony warns testers: Name change side effects
If you are among the few lucky ones who are invited to participate in the preview, you need to be careful.
Therefore, participants should read the fine print: As much as some players are looking forward to the feature, the fine print in the invitations warns testers about some concerning side effects. These could result in a name change during the preview.
What could happen? If the PlayStation Network Online ID is changed, it may well happen that some games on the PS3, PS4, and PS Vita do not support this change. Some game developers have already warned about this. Due to technical reasons, it could be a time-consuming process to retroactively adjust old multiplayer titles.
For testers, this apparently means concretely that they may lose access to certain content. This includes already purchased content such as in-game currency, add-ons, or DLCs. Additionally, save data, leaderboard placements, and trophy progress may be lost. It could also happen that parts of games or apps do not function properly and the old PSN ID is still displayed.
While these are only potential consequences that will not necessarily occur, testers should be aware of what consequences they may have to anticipate.
Can the change be reversed during the test? Yes, it is possible. But beware: During the test phase, this can only be done once per account. Moreover, you can only successfully restore your old name if it does not violate the current terms of use of the PlayStation Network.
After the feature is introduced, it will be possible to change your name as often as you like. The first change is free, but thereafter, a fee will apply for each additional change.
The first testers report: ResetEra user Araya Soren claims he changed his name hours ago but has been able to keep all purchases so far. He only lost leaderboard progress in The Last of Us Remastered.
