Change PSN ID? It’s coming soon
Sony announced that the name change function will start through the PlayStation Preview program and for selected users. During the test in the Preview program, testers can change their ID online as often as they want. Last week, there was already a leak regarding this feature.
What do the changes cost? The first change is free. After that, you pay €9.99 for it. PS Plus members pay €4.99 for each subsequent change after the first.
Where do you change the PSN ID? You can do it through the settings menu or your PS4 profile page.
You can display the old name: Those who change their ID can display the previous ID along with the new one. This way, friends can find you more easily and understand to whom the new name belongs.
Once you have decided whether the old ID should be displayed or not, you cannot adjust it after the online ID change is completed.
When does it start? The Preview program for this feature is supposed to be completed by the end of November 2018. After that, the rollout for all PS4 users will follow in early 2019. Sony has not yet disclosed an exact date.
Name change not compatible with all games
In the announcement, Sony explained that not all games are compatible with this.
No issues with new games: Games released after April 1, 2018, are compatible with the ID change function.
Not all older games fit this: A large portion of the games released before April 1, 2018, are also compatible with the function. But not all. Certain games on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita may encounter issues.
This is what to do in case of problems: If you notice any issues after the change, you can revert to the original PSN ID at any time. However, during the Preview program, this is only possible once. Resetting should resolve most issues that arise with the name change.
List of compatible games coming: Once the function officially starts, Sony will release a list of compatible games that were released before April 1.
