Some interesting games for PlayStation 4 will be released in the PS Store this week between February 19 and February 25. Two new releases are worth a closer look – as they might be worth your time.
The PlayStation Store is expanding its offerings this week with a host of new games and additional content. Two interesting PS4 games with multiplayer elements are Konami’s “Metal Gear Survive” on February 22 and “Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet” from Bandai Namco Entertainment on February 23.
What kind of games are these? Who are they worthwhile for?
What is Metal Gear Survive?
“Metal Gear Survive” is a third-person co-op shooter with survival elements. The online game follows seamlessly from the destruction of Mother Base in “Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes.” Through a dimensional portal, Big Boss’s Militaires Sans Frontières enter an alternate reality where their survival skills are put to the test against hordes of zombies.

The similarities with “Metal Gear Solid 5” are relatively minor. Apart from the setting in the “Metal Gear” universe that ties to “Phantom Pain” and a similar open world, “Metal Gear Survive” takes its own gaming path:
- Metal Gear Survive has a purely solo campaign. Although there is a co-op multiplayer mode for up to four players outside these missions, PvP features like in “Phantom Pain” are missing.
- The game is heavily influenced by survival aspects. Characters experience hunger, need to gather food, and cook meat to protect themselves from diseases. While you are outside the base searching for important items or battling enemies, you will encounter toxic clouds. For such situations, there is a mask with a limited oxygen tank. If you run out of air, you must return to the base.
- Another core element of the game is the crafting system. In “Metal Gear Survive,” you can gather various resources. From these, you can craft a variety of weapons or invest resources in the construction and defense of your own base. You can upgrade it with resources or equip it with powerful weapons.
- RPG elements are also present. The zombies leave behind something called “Kuban Energy,” which you can use to unlock new attributes or abilities for your character at your discretion.
It could be something for you if:
You generally enjoy the survival genre. Because if you exclude the “Metal Gear” addition from the title of the game, “Metal Gear Survive” reveals itself as a quite attractive representative of the genre for survival fans – especially since there aren’t many survival games on the market for PS4 and Xbox One. “Metal Gear Survive” can fill this gap. But also those who enjoyed exploring the world in “Metal Gear Solid 5,” liked to explore and collect, and always wanted to build a camp with friends can do this in “Metal Gear Survive.”
Better to steer clear if:

You are die-hard fans of the “Metal Gear Solid” series and expect exciting adventures around Solid Snake. This game was definitely not developed for that audience! Those expecting a deep military plot full of intrigue and exciting twists will likely not really get what they hoped for with “Metal Gear Survive.” Also, players who cannot get into the survival genre should rather avoid this title.
Current sentiment:
Right now, “Metal Gear Survive” is a contentious topic – it has caused heated discussions and controversial debates in the gaming community long before its release.
It is the first game in the “Metal Gear” series created without the legendary creator Hideo Kojima. This does not sit well with many players and fans of the series. They fear that “Metal Gear Survive” will turn into a soulless cash grab by Konami. The good name of the Metal Gear series is thus being wasted to market a silly zombie shooting game.

Others, however, say that “Metal Gear Survive” is a solid and quite fun representative of the survival genre, emphasizing that it is only the game name that led to this whole controversy and not the actual quality of the game. Had the game been given a different name that omitted the “Metal Gear” addition, the criticism might not have been so severe.
What you should know before buying Metal Gear Survive
This discussion has already been dividing the community for quite some time. However, a positive aspect might be a statement from the MGS producers. They have now stated that the game will not contain microtransactions, loot boxes, or P2W features.

What is Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet?
“Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet” is a “shooter RPG” and is based on the second season of the popular anime series “Sword Art Online.” Players find themselves in the virtual world of Gun Gale Online – basically a “game within a game”. Primarily, a lot of shooting happens in Gun Gale Online, as the name suggests, with all kinds of weapons, from sniper rifles to small pistols or machine guns. If desired, players can also opt for melee weapons and, like in the anime, face a special challenge.

Primarily, “Fatal Bullet” is a single-player game that tells an exciting story in the Sword Art Online universe. But multiplayer fans should also find something to enjoy, as there are PvP battles between teams and co-op missions against particularly tough bosses.
It is ideal for you if:
You loved the second season of “Sword Art Online” and want to spend more time in the world of Gun Gale Online, which was only partially presented in the anime. Additionally, those who have already played the JRPGs that are part of SAO will likely also enjoy this game.
Besides that, the game is also recommended for all fans of “light” shooters with many story elements. It suits both as a solo activity for an extensive gaming evening or as a co-op variant with some friends in PvP and PvE.
Better to steer clear if:
You are expecting a complete MMO in the style of the anime “Sword Art Online”. “Fatal Bullet” is still, at its core, a single-player title, even if there is plenty of multiplayer action. However, the title is not a “real” MMO.
Furthermore, the game is not for those who cannot get into a typically Japanese setting and dislike the “cliché drama” or big-eyed aesthetics of anime.
Anime polarizes – and Fatal Bullet is no exception.
Current sentiment:
The predecessor “Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization” received quite good reviews from players, so a fan base has already gathered around the release. However, this also places high expectations on “Fatal Bullet.” Many fans also hope that the multiplayer part of “Fatal Bullet” can provide long-term motivation. Additionally, the graphics, which did not do justice to their time, were a major point of criticism – at least from the first impression, improvements have been made in all areas. The anticipation outweighs the doubts among fans.
