In the story of Cyberpunk 2077, cybernetic implants are widespread. In the game, the cyberware system is the best way to upgrade your character: As you can either become significantly stronger and more powerful or integrate advantages in hacking. Clothing plays (almost) no role anymore for the values.
But how does it compare to the real world? While we may not yet be integrating implants that allow us to see through walls or hack computers, we have made great strides in recent years.
Already, state-of-the-art prosthetics are being used, but primarily for medical reasons
Where are we in the real world? Today, powerful robotic prosthetics are being developed, some of which are even connected to the brain and can be controlled like organic limbs. With bionic prosthetics, the goal is primarily to replace lost body parts like arms and legs and to help injured individuals lead a normal life.
The majority of prosthetics are used for medical reasons to restore normal functional levels. For instance, a boy received a robotic hand made from a 3D printer so he wouldn’t have to hide his malformed hand anymore.
In Cyberpunk 2077, you install cyberware into your own body to achieve superhuman levels, to be stronger than your opponents, or to hack into computer systems.
Such functions do not exist for us, but the military has long been experimenting with large exoskeletons. They hope for improved endurance and more strength. Students have developed an exoskeleton to make walking easier and faster.
Research is not only interested in compensating for disabilities but also in providing advantages that users can benefit from in the long term.
And what about gaming? There could also be exciting “prosthetics” for gamers in the future. For example, a company has introduced a gaming mouse that you can only control with your thoughts. This allows you to click much faster and gain advantages in shooters:
