Battle Cry of Freedom is a new realistic historical war game now available on Steam. The simulation was first announced in 2012 – so it has been in development for quite a while. However, the developers have a lot planned.
What kind of game is this? Battle Cry of Freedom is set in the 19th century, during the American Civil War. This war is also the backdrop for the war simulation.
You take on the role of a US soldier or a Confederate and fight on vast battlefields for victory. The realistic shooter can be played in both first-person and third-person – although “shooter” may not quite capture the genre.
Indie developer Flying Squirrel Games has been working on Battle Cry for Freedom since at least 2012. It was first announced back then. Now, the war game has its own page on Steam (via Steam).
What are the features? On the Steam page, the developer boasts various features – primarily massive matches. You should be able to come together with up to 300 players in one round. Additionally:
- destructible and realistic environments
- divisions: infantry, artillery, and specialists
- various roles such as snipers, musicians with over 50 songs, gunners, and engineers
- over 120 unique weapons, 70 types of ammunition, and 20 cannons
- melee combat with fixed bayonets
- 14 different battlefields
- realistic ballistics
- dynamically changing times of day and weather
- regiments (clans)
Uniforms, weapons, and environments are designed to be historically accurate and detailed. You can customize your soldiers as you like.
When and where will the game be released? Although the game already has a Steam page, the release is set for 2022. So far, the platform known is only PC.
Developers have experience with historical games
Flying Squirrel Games has previously worked on historical games. The developers are behind the DLC “Napoleonic Wars” for Mount & Blade: Warband. Since its release in April 2012, the DLC has accumulated 2,902 reviews on Steam, of which 89% are positive (“very positive”, via Steam).
Whether the wait of ten years by the time it releases will be worth it remains to be seen.
If you’re looking for new material until then, you might be interested in “Hell Let Loose.” While the shooter is set in World War II at a different time, it also focuses on detail and realism:
Hyper-realistic World War shooter is doing great on Steam and will be released soon
