The list of nominees for the Gamescom Awards has been released and includes a completely unknown game. Are we expecting a new Diablo spin-off under the working title Project Mephisto?
The title Project Mephisto is nominated in the “Platform” category for the best console game on the Playstation 4. The other nominees – Marvel’s Spiderman and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – are already known, with extensive information and video material available.
There is currently nothing known about the title Project Mephisto. However, there are indications suggesting that Project Mephisto may be one of the Diablo projects recently announced by Blizzard.
Hints about a new Diablo spin-off: Mephisto is the first great evil that players had to face in Diablo 2 in the third act. Mephisto did not appear in the third part. Along with the announcement to advance large Diablo projects and the nomination for the Gamescom Award, we can certainly expect something big.
A new Diablo installment in collaboration with Sony? The designation “Project” in the working title and the nomination for a Gamescom Award for the Playstation 4 platform also suggest that Sony is heavily involved in the development. The Playstation VR was previously referred to by the working title “Project Morpheus”; the parallels are unmistakable.
This seems rather strange. After all, Diablo spin-offs have traditionally been released on PC first, with console ports usually following years later. Could a new Diablo installment be released simultaneously on all platforms or even exclusively on the Playstation 4?
Fans have been waiting for years for a continuation of the Diablo series. The predecessor, Diablo 3, was released on PC back in 2012 and is receiving a port to the Nintendo Switch later this year.
We will learn more at the Gamescom. The Gamescom will open its doors on August 21 and will be open to gamers from all over the world until August 25.
