During a FIFA 20 tournament, there was a strange bug. A pro was eliminated, even though he had actually scored – what was going on?
This was the situation: Losing a game in FIFA 20 because you don’t score the decisive goal is annoying. However, losing it despite having scored is probably even more frustrating. That’s exactly what happened to FIFA pro Giuseppe Gustalla.
He is under contract as an eSports player for FIFA 20 at the American soccer club LA Galaxy and was in the North American Qualifiers. In a crucial game, a penalty shootout ensued – and Gustalla was one goal behind.
Penalty scored, but pro out
FIFA 20 doesn’t count goals: Gustalla had to convert his penalty to avoid losing the game. And he did: He aimed for the bottom left corner, shot, and hit the post. From there, the ball ended up in the net, so it was clearly a goal. However, the game apparently thought otherwise.
Not only did the commentators say, “And he fails,” but the goal simply wasn’t counted. The opponent won the game, Gustalla was eliminated from the qualifiers. Everything as if the ball hadn’t gone in. How it looked was shown by the pro in a post on Twitter:
How the player reacted: The admins also decided according to a statement from Gustalla at the end on “no goal”, which led to his elimination from the tournament. “I am such a passionate player and I play this game as well as I can. But how can anyone take the game seriously if EA doesn’t take it seriously and fixes such elementary mistakes?” The pro was upset: “If another top pro were competing in a different eSports game, such things wouldn’t happen.” The realism of the game is certainly not represented by the situation.
Overall, FIFA has recently also raised questions in the competitive area. Among other things, the Weekend League was extended due to server problems and a game was apparently decided by rock-paper-scissors due to connection issues.
Currently, another FIFA pro and streamer is also making headlines:
